SURAH GHAFIR
(Also known as Momin)
The Forgiver
(Maccie, Surah # 40, Verses 85)
40:1 Ha, Meem.
40:2 The revelation of the Book (this Quran) is from Allah the All-Mighty, the All-Knower
THAT IS ALLAH
40:3 The Forgiver of sin and Acceptor of repentance, the Severe in punishment, and Infinite in bounty. There is no God ˹worthy of worship˺ except Him. To Him ˹alone˺ is the final return.
PREVIOUS NATIONS REJECTED ALLAH'S REVELATION
40:4 None disputes the signs of Allah except the disbelievers, so do not be deceived by their prosperity throughout the land.
40:5 The people of Noah who lived before and the Confederate (evil) tribes who lived after them rejected Our revelations. Every nation schemed against its Messengers to seize(destroy) them and disputed against them to defeat the truth. But torment struck them and how terrible was their retribution!
40:6 Thus has the Word of your Lord been justified against those who disbelieved, that they will be the dwellers of the Fire.
ANGELS MAKE DUA FOR THE BELIEVERS
40:7 The House [angels] who carry the Throne and those around it exalt [Allah] with praise of their Lord and believe in Him and ask forgiveness for those who have believed, [saying],
"Our Lord, You have encompassed all things in mercy and knowledge, so forgive those who have repented and followed Your way and protect them from the punishment of Hellfire.
"Our Lord! And make them enter the 'Adn (Paradise (everlasting Gardens) which you have promised them, along with the righteous among their fathers, their wives, and their offspring! Verily, You are the All-Mighty, the All-Wise.
And protect them from ˹punishments of their˺ evil deeds. For whoever You protect from the evil of their deeds on that Day will have been shown Your mercy. And that is the supreme success.
IS THERE ANY WAY TO GET OUT OF THE FIRE?
40:10 Those who disbelieve will be addressed (at the time of entering into the Fire): "Allah's hatred was greater towards you than your hatred towards one another (now), when you were called to the Faith but you used to refuse.
40:11 They will say: "Our Lord! You have made us die twice , and You have given us life twice. Now we confess our sins, then is there any way to get out (of the Fire)?"
40:12 They will be told,˺ “˹No!˺ This is because when Allah alone was invoked, you ˹staunchly˺ disbelieved. But when others were associated with Him ˹in worship˺, you ˹readily˺ believed. So ˹Today˺ judgment belongs to Allah ˹alone˺—the Most High, All-Great.”
40:13 He is the One Who shows you His signs and sends down ˹rain as˺ a provision for you from the sky. But none will remember except he who turns back [in repentance].
40:14 So call upon Allah with sincere devotion even though the disbelievers dislike this.
40:15 He is˺ Highly Exalted in rank, Lord of the Throne. He sends down the revelation by His command to whoever He wills of His servants to warn ˹all˺ of the Day of Meeting
JUDGMENT DAY
40:16 Nothing will remain hidden from Allah concerning them on the day when they appear before Allah (from their graves) (It will be asked), "To whom does the kingdom belong on this Day?" (It will be answered), "The kingdom belongs to the Almighty One God"
40:17 Today every soul will be rewarded for what it has done. No injustice Today! Surely Allah is swift in account.”
40:18 Warn them ˹O Prophet˺ of the approaching Day when the hearts will jump into the throats, suppressing distress. The wrongdoers will have neither a close friend nor intercessor to be heard.
40:19 Allah ˹even˺ knows the treachery of the eyes and whatever the hearts conceal.
40:20 And Allah judges with truth, while those to whom they invoke besides Him, cannot judge anything. Certainly, Allah! He is the All-Hearer, the All-Seer.
PREVIOUS NATIONS
40:21 Have they not traveled in the land and seen what was the end of those who were before them? They were superior to them in strength, and in the traces (which they left) in the land. But Allah seized them with punishment for their sins. And none had they to protect them from Allah.
40:22 That was because there came to them their Messengers with clear evidence, proofs and signs but they disbelieved (in them). So Allah seized them with punishment. Verily, He is All-Strong, Severe in punishment.
PHARAOH PLOTTED TO KILL PROPHET MUSA
40:23 And We did certainly send Musa with Our signs and a clear authority
40:24 To Pharaoh, Haman and Qarun; but they said, "[He is] a magician and a liar."
40:25 Then, when he came to them with the truth from Us, they said, “Kill the sons of those who believe with him and keep their women.” But the plotting of the disbelievers was only in vain.
40:26 The Pharaoh said, "Let me kill Moses and let him call for help from his Lord. I am afraid that he will change your religion or spread evil through the land.".
40:27 Musa said, "I seek protection from your and my Lord against every arrogant person who has no faith in the Day of Judgment."
BELIEVING MAN FROM FAMILY OF PHARAON
40:28 And a believing man from the family of Pharaoh who concealed his faith said, "Do you kill a man [merely] because he says, 'My Lord is Allah' while he has brought you clear proofs from your Lord? And if he should be lying, then upon him is [the consequence of] his lie; but if he should be truthful, there will strike you some of what he promises you. Indeed, Allah does not guide one who is a transgressor and a liar.
40:29 My people, today you have the kingdom and the power on earth but who will help us against the wrath of God if it will befall us?" The Pharaoh said, "I show you only what I think is proper and guide you only to the right direction".
40:30 The believing man said, "I am afraid that you will face a (terrible) day like that of the groups:
40:31 "Like the fate of the people of Nuh, and 'Ad, and Thamud and those who came after them. And Allah wills no injustice for (His) slaves.
40:32 My people, I am afraid for you on (the Day of Judgment), when people will cry for help.
40:33 On that day you will run away, but no one will be able to protect you from (God's Judgment). No one can guide one whom God has caused to go astray.
40:34 Joseph already came to you earlier with clear proofs, yet you never ceased to doubt what he came to you with. When he died you said, ‘Allah will never send a messenger after him.’ This is how Allah leaves every transgressor and doubter to stray—
40:35 Those who dispute concerning the signs of Allah without an authority having come to them - great is hatred [of them] in the sight of Allah and in the sight of those who have believed. Thus does Allah seal over every heart [belonging to] an arrogant tyrant.
40:36 And Pharaoh said, "O Haman, construct for me a tower that I might reach the ways -
40:37 to the heavens and be able to climb up to the Lord of Moses. I think that Moses is lying." Thus, Pharaoh's evil deeds seemed attractive to him and prevented him from the right path. The Pharaoh's plots only led him to his own destructor.
40:38 And the man who believed urged, “O my people! Follow me, ˹and˺ I will lead you to the Way of Guidance.
40:39 O my people, this worldly life is only [temporary] enjoyment, and indeed, the Hereafter - that is the home of [permanent] settlement.
40:40 Whoever does an evil deed will only be paid back with its equivalent. And whoever does good, whether male or female, and is a believer, they will enter Paradise, where they will be provided for without limit.
40:41 O my people! How is it that I invite you to salvation, while you invite me to the Fire!
40:42 You invite me to disbelieve in Allah and associate with Him what I have no knowledge of, while I invite you to the Almighty, Most Forgiving.
40:43 There is no doubt that whatever ˹idols˺ you invite me to ˹worship˺ are not worthy to be invoked either in this world or the Hereafter. ˹Undoubtedly,˺ our return is to Allah, and the transgressors will be the inmates of the Fire.
40:44 You will remember what I say to you, and I entrust my affairs to Allah. Surely Allah is All-Seeing of all ˹His˺ servants.”
40:45 Allah protected him against their evil plans and the people of the Pharaoh were struck by the most horrible torment.
40:46 They are exposed to the Fire ˹in their graves˺ morning and evening. And on the Day the Hour will be established ˹it will be said˺, “Admit Pharaoh’s people into the harshest punishment ˹of Hell˺.”
40:47 And, when they will dispute in the Fire, the weak will say to those who were arrogant;"Verily! We followed you, can you then take from us some portion of the Fire?"
40:48 Those who were arrogant will say: "We are all (together) in this (Fire)! Verily Allah has judged between (His) slaves!"
40:49 And those in the Fire will cry out to the keepers of Hell, “Pray to your Lord to lighten the torment for us ˹even˺ for one day!”
40:50 The keepers will ask them, "Did your Messengers not come to you with illustrious evidence (of the Truth)? They will reply, "Yes, they did." The keepers will then say, "You may pray but the prayer of the disbelievers will not be answered".
40:51 We certainly help Our messengers and the believers, ˹both˺ in this worldly life and on the Day the witnesses will stand forth ˹for testimony˺—
40:52 The Day their excuse will not benefit the wrongdoers, and they will have the curse, and they will have the worst home [i.e., Hell].
40:53 And indeed, We gave Moses ˹true˺ guidance, and made the Children of Israel inherit the Scripture—
40:54 As guidance and a reminder for those of understanding.
40:55 So be patient (O Muhammad SAW). Verily, the Promise of Allah is true, and ask forgiveness for your fault, and glorify the praises of your Lord in the Ashi (i.e. the time period after the midnoon till sunset) and in the Ibkar (i.e. the time period from early morning or sunrise till before midnoon)
40:56 Those who dispute the revelations of Allah without having received any authority (evidence) do so because of their arrogance, but their arrogance cannot bring them any success. Seek protection from Allah for He is All-hearing and All-aware.
40:57 The creation of the heavens and the earth is certainly greater than the re-creation of humankind, but most people do not know.
40:58 Those blind ˹to the truth˺ and those who can see are not equal, nor are those who believe and do good ˹equal˺ to those who do evil. How little to this you pay attention.
40:59 The Hour is certainly coming, there is no doubt about it. But most people do not believe.
40:60 Your Lord has proclaimed, “Call upon Me, I will respond to you. Surely those who are too proud to worship Me will enter Hell in humiliation.
IT IS ALLAH
40:61 Allah, it is He Who has made the night for you that you may rest therein and the day for you to see. Truly, Allah is full of Bounty to mankind, yet most of mankind give no thanks.
40:62 That is Allah, your Lord, the Creator of all things. There is no god ˹worthy of worship˺ except Him. Why then do you turn away from His worship to the worshiping of idols?
40:63 Thus were turned away those who used to deny the Ayat of Allah.
40:64 It is Allah Who made the earth a place of settlement for you and the sky a canopy. He shaped you ˹in the womb˺, perfecting your form. And He has provided you with what is good and lawful. That is Allah—your Lord. So Blessed is Allah, Lord of all worlds.
40:65 He is the Ever-Living; there is no deity except Him, so call upon Him, [being] sincere to Him in religion. [All] praise is [due] to Allah, Lord of the worlds.
40:66 Say, ˹O Prophet,˺ “I have been forbidden to worship those ˹idols˺ you worship besides Allah, since clear proofs have come to me from my Lord. And I have been commanded to ˹fully˺ submit to the Lord of all worlds.”
40:67 He is the One Who created you from dust, then from a sperm-drop, then ˹developed you into˺ a clinging clot ˹of blood˺, then He brings you forth as infants, so that you may reach your prime, and become old—though some of you ˹may˺ die sooner—reaching an appointed time, so perhaps you may understand ˹Allah’s power˺.
40:68 He it is Who gives life and causes death. And when He decides upon a thing He says to it only: "Be!" and it is.
40:69 Have you not seen how those who dispute the revelations of God, turn away from Truth to falsehood?
40:70 Those who rejected the Book and the message which was given to Our Messenger will soon know (the consequences of their evil deeds).
HELL FIRE
40:71 When iron collars will be around their necks and chains on their legs. They will be dragged
40:72 In the boiling water, then they will be burned in the Fire.
40:73 Then they will be asked, “Where are those ˹idols˺ you used to associate
40:74 They will reply, "They have abandoned us. In fact, we had worshiped nothing" Thus does God cause the disbelievers to go astray.
40:75 They will be told,˺ “This ˹punishment˺ is for being prideful on earth unjustly and for acting arrogantly.
40:76 Enter the gates of Hell, to stay there forever. What an evil home for the arrogant!”
40:77 So be patient ˹O Prophet˺. Surely Allah’s promise is true. Whether We show you some of what We threaten them with, or cause you to die ˹before that˺, to Us they will ˹all˺ be returned.
40:78 And, indeed We have sent Messengers before you (O Muhammad SAW); of some of them We have related to you their story and of some We have not related to you their story, and it was not given to any Messenger that he should bring a sign except by the Leave of Allah. So, when comes the Commandment of Allah, the matter will be decided with truth, and the followers of falsehood will then be lost.
40:79 It is Allah Who made cattle for you so that you may ride some and eat others.
40:80 Also, you find in them ˹other˺ benefits. And by means of them you may reach destinations you desire. And you are carried upon ˹some of˺ them and upon ships.
40:81 And He shows you His signs. So which of the signs of Allah do you deny?
40:82 Have they not traveled throughout the land to see what was the end of those who were ˹destroyed˺ before them? They were far superior in might and ˹richer in˺ monuments throughout the land, but their ˹worldly˺ gains were of no benefit to them.
40:83 When their messengers came to them with clear proofs, they were prideful in whatever ˹worldly˺ knowledge they had, and were ultimately overwhelmed by what they used to ridicule.
40:84 When they saw Our punishment, they cried, “˹Now˺ we believe in Allah alone and reject what we had been associating with Him!”
40:85 But their faith was of no benefit to them when they saw our torment. This has ˹always˺ been Allah’s way ˹of dealing˺ with His ˹wicked˺ servants. Then and there the disbelievers were in ˹total˺ loss.
