SURAH AN- NISA
Women
(Madnie, Surah # 4, Verses 176 )
FAMILY TIES-KINSHIP
4:1. O mankind! Fear your Lord, Who created you from a single person (Adam), and from him He created his wife [Hawwa], and from them many men and women. And fear Allah through Whose name you swear to settle your differences (rights), and (do not cut the relations of) the (kinship). Surely, Allah is Watching over you.
ORPHANS RIGHT
4:2. Give to the orphans their property (When they reach maturity). And do not exchange (your) bad things for (their) good ones. and do not cheat them by mixing their wealth with your own. For this would indeed be a great sin.
UPTO 4 MARRIAGES IN ISLAM
4:3. And if you fear that you shall not be able to deal justly with the orphan girls, then marry (other) women of your choice, two or three, or four but if you fear that you shall not be able to deal justly (with them), then only one that your right hands possess (slave women). That is less likely to prevent you from doing injustice.
4:4. And give to the women (whom you marry) their Mahr with a good heart, However, if they allow you to keep a part of it as a favor to you, you may spend it with pleasure.
ORPHAN’S PROPERTY
4:5. Do not entrust the incapable ˹among your dependants˺ with your wealth which Allah has made a means of support for you—but feed and clothe them from it, and speak to them kindly.
4:6. Before returning the orphan's property to them, make sure that they have reached the age of marriage. Do not consume their property wastefully until such a time. The rich (guardian) should not take any of his property. However, a poor (guardian) may use a reasonable portion. When you return their property, make sure you have witnesses. and Allah is AllSufficient in taking account.
INHERITANCE
4:7. There is a share for men and a share for women from what is left by parents and nearest relatives, whether the property be small or large - a legal share.
4:8. And when the relatives and the orphans and the poor are present at the time of division, give them out of the property, and speak to them words of kindness and justice.
4:9. Those who are concerned about the welfare of their own children after their death, should have fear of Allah (when dealing with the orphans) and guide them properly.
4:10. Those who wrongfully consume the property of orphans are, in fact, consuming fire in their bellies and they will be burnt in the blazing fire.
4:11. Allah commands you as regards your children's (inheritance); After the payment of debts:
to the male, a portion equal to that of two females;
if (there are) only daughters, two or more, their share is two thirds of the inheritance;
if only one, her share is half.
for parents, a sixth share of inheritance to each if the deceased left children;
if no children, and the parents are the (only) heirs, the mother has a third;
if the deceased left brothers or (sisters), the mother has a sixth.
These are the decreed shares according to the laws of Allah. Regardless of how you feel about your parents or children, you do not know which of them is more beneficial to you. And Allah is Ever AllKnower, AllWise.
HUSBAND’S SHARE IS ½ IF NO KIDS & ¼ WITH KIDS AFTER DEBT
4:12. If your wives die;
For you is half of what your wives leave if they have no children.
But if they have children, for you is one fourth of what they leave, after any bequest they [may have] made or debt
WIFE’S SHARE IS ¼ IF NO KIDS & ⅛ WITH KIDS AFTER DEBT
If your husband die;
And for the wives is one fourth if you leave no children;
But if you leave a child, then for them is an eighth of what you leave, after any bequest you [may have] made or debt.
If the deceased, either male or female, has no surviving heirs such as parents or children but has a brother or a sister;
the brother or sister will each inherit one-sixth of the legacy.
If there are more than just a brother or a sister, they will share one-third of the legacy.
This is after the payment of any debts and things bequeathed have been excluded from the legacy, so that no one will be caused to suffer any loss. It is a guide from Allah, the All-knowing and Forbearing.
4:13. These are the limits (set by) Allah and whoever obeys Allah and His Messenger will be admitted to Gardens under which rivers flow (in Paradise), to abide therein, and that will be the great success.
4:14. And whosoever disobeys Allah and His Messenger, and transgresses His limits, He will cast him into the Fire wherein they will live forever, suffering a humiliating torment.
ADULTERY OR FORNICATION
4:15. And those of your women who commit illegal sexual intercourse, take the evidence of four witnesses from amongst you against them; and if they testify, detain them to houses until death comes to them or Allah ordains for them some (other) way.
4:16. And the two persons (man and woman) among you who commit illegal sexual intercourse, punish them both. And if they repent and do righteous good deeds, leave them alone. Surely, Allah is Ever the One Who accepts repentance, (and He is) Most Merciful.
SINS OUT OF IGNORANCE & FOOLISHNESS
4:17. Allah accepts only the repentance of those who do evil in ignorance and foolishness and repent soon afterwards; it is they to whom Allah will forgive and Allah is Ever AllKnower, AllWise.
4:18. There is no forgiveness for those who continue to do evil deeds until death faces one of them and he says: "Now I repent;" nor of those who die while they are disbelievers. For them We have prepared a painful torment.
FORBIDDEN TO INHERIT WOMEN AGAINST HER WILL
4:19. O you who believe! You are forbidden to inherit women against their will, Do not create difficulties for your wives in order to force them to give-up part of what you had given to them (Mahr) to set themselves free from the bond of marriage, unless they have clearly committed adultery. Always treat them reasonably. If you dislike them, you could be disliking that which Allah has placed abundant good in it.
4:20. If you want to divorce a woman so that you can marry another, do not take back Mahr which you had paid even if what you paid was a large amount of gold. To do this is a slanderous act and a manifest sin.
4:21. How can you take it back when you have had intimate relations and made a solemn agreement with each other?
MUSLIM MEN FORBIDDEN TO MARRY
4:22. Do not marry former wives of your fathers—except what was done previously; indeed it was shameful and most hateful, and an evil way.
4:23. You are forbidden to marry your;
mothers, daughters, sisters
your father's sisters, your mother's sisters
your brother's daughters, your sister's daughters
your [milk] mothers who nursed you
your sisters through nursing
your wives' mothers
your step-daughters whom you have brought up and with whose mothers you have had carnal relations. It would not be a sin to marry her if you did not have carnal relations with her mother.
Nor the wives of your own sons
nor two sisters together at the same time—except what was done previously. Surely Allah is All-Forgiving, Most Merciful.
END OF FOURTH CHAPTER
MUSLIM MEN CANNOT MARRY MARRIED WOMEN
4:24. You are forbidden to marry married women except your slave-girls. (this is) Allah's ordinance to you. Besides these, it is lawful for you to marry other women if you pay their dower, maintain chastity and do not committing fornication. so with those of whom you have enjoyed sexual relations, give them their Mahr as prescribed; but if after a Mahr is prescribed, you agree mutually (to give more), there is no sin on you. Surely, Allah is Ever AllKnowing, AllWise.
4:25. If any of you cannot afford to marry a chaste believing woman, marry your believing slave-girls. Allah has full knowledge about your Faith, You have the same faith. Marry them with the permission of their (guardians) and give them their Mahr according to what is reasonable; they should be chaste, not adulterous, nor taking boyfriends. If after marriage they commit adultery, they should receive half of the punishment of a free woman who has committed the same crime. This is for those who fear falling into evil. It is better for you to have self-control. Allah is All-forgiving and All-merciful.
4:26. Allah wishes to make clear (what is lawful and what is unlawful) to you, and to show you the ways of those before you, and accept your repentance, and Allah is AllKnower, AllWise.
4:27. Allah wishes to accept your repentance, but those who follow their lusts, wish that you (believers) should deviate tremendously away from the Right Path.
4:28. Allah wishes to lighten (the burden) for you; and man was created weak (cannot be patient to leave sexual intercourse with woman).
DO NOT KILL ONE ANOTHER
4:29. Believers, do not exchange your wealth in wrongful ways unless it is in trade by mutual agreement. Do not kill one another. God is All-merciful to you.
4:30. And whoever commits that through aggression and injustice, We shall cast him into the Fire, and that is easy for Allah.
4:31. If you avoid the major sins which you are forbidden, We will remove from you your lesser sins and admit you to a noble entrance [into Paradise].
4:32. Do not envy the favors which Allah has granted to some of you. Men and women will both be rewarded according to their deeds, and ask Allah of His Bounty. Surely, Allah is Ever AllKnower of everything.
4:33. And to everyone, We have appointed heirs of that (property) left by parents and relatives. To those also with whom you have made a pledge (brotherhood), give them their due portion (by Wasiya wills, etc.). Truly, Allah is Ever a Witness over all things.
HUSBANDS ARE QAWAM
4:34. Men are the protectors and maintainers of women, because Allah has made one of them to excel the other, and because they spend (to support them) from their means. Therefore the righteous women are devoutly obedient (to Allah and to their husbands), and guard in the husband's absence what Allah orders them to guard (e.g. their chastity, their husband's property, etc.). As to those women on whose part you see ill conduct, advise them (first), (next), refuse to share their beds, (and last) beat them (lightly, if it is useful), but if they return to obedience, seek not against them means (of annoyance). Surely, Allah is Ever Most High, Most Great.
DISAGREEMENT BETWEEN HUSBAND AND WIFE
4:35.And if you fear a strong disagreement between the two, send a mediator from his side and a mediator from her side. If they both desire reconciliation, Allah will cause it between them. Indeed, Allah is ever Knowing and Aware.
BE-KIND TO EACH OTHER
4:36.Worship Allah ˹alone˺ and associate none with Him. And be kind to parents, relatives, orphans, the poor, near and distant neighbors, close friends, ˹needy˺ travelers, and those ˹bonds people˺ in your possession. Surely Allah does not like whoever is arrogant, boastful—
4:37. Those who are stingy (hoard their wealth), promote stinginess among people, and withhold Allah’s bounties. We have prepared for the disbelievers a humiliating punishment.
4:38. Likewise for those who spend their wealth to show off and do not believe in Allah or the Last Day. And whoever takes Shaitan as an associate—what an evil associate they have!
4:39. How could it have harmed them if they had believed in Allah and the Last Day and spent their property for the cause of Allah? Allah knows them very well
4:40.Indeed, Allah never wrongs ˹anyone˺—even by an atom’s weight. And if it is a good deed, He will multiply it many times over and will give a great reward out of His grace.
4:41. How (will it be) then, when We bring from each nation a witness and We bring you (O Muhammad SAW) as a witness against these people?
4:42. On that Day, those who denied ˹Allah˺ and disobeyed the Messenger will wish they were reduced to dust. And they will never be able to hide anything from Allah.
RULING OF ALCOHOL BEFORE IT WAS HARAM DURING PRAYER
4:43. O believers! Do not approach prayer while you are drunk until you are aware of what you say, nor in a state of ˹full˺ impurity—unless you merely pass through ˹the mosque˺—until you have bathed. But if you are ill, on a journey, or have relieved yourselves, or been intimate with your wives and cannot find water, then purify yourselves with clean earth, wiping your faces and hands. And Allah is Ever-Pardoning, All-Forgiving.
PEOPLE OF SCRIPTURE
4:44. Have you seen those who had received a portion of the Book trade misguidance and try to make you, too, go astray?
4:45. Allah knows best who your enemies are! And Allah is sufficient as a Guardian, and He is sufficient as a Helper.
4:46. Among those who are Jews, there are some who displace words from (their) right places and say: "We hear your word (O Muhammad) and disobey," and "Hear and let you (O Muhammad) hear nothing." And Ra'ina with a twist of their tongues and as a mockery of the religion. And if only they had said: "We hear and obey", and "Do make us understand," it would have been better for them, and more proper, but Allah has cursed them for their disbelief, so they believe not except a few.
4:47 O you who have been given the Scripture (Jews and Christians)! Believe in what We have revealed (to Muhammad SAW) confirming what is (already) with you, before We wipe out your faces (by making them like the back of necks; without nose, mouth, eyes, etc.) and turn them hindwards, or curse them as We cursed the Sabbathbreakers. And the Commandment of Allah is always executed.
4:48 Indeed, Allah does not forgive associating others with Him ˹in worship˺, but forgives anything else of whoever He wills. And whoever associates others with Allah has indeed committed a grave sin.
4:49 (Muhammad), have you seen those who try to purify themselves? They should know that God only purifies whomever He wants. And none will be wronged ˹even by the width of˺ the thread of a date stone.
4:50 Look, how they invent a lie against Allah, and enough is that as a manifest sin.
4:51 Have you seen how those who had been given a share of the Book believe in idols and Satan and who say, "The disbelievers are better guided than the believers".
4:52 They are those whom Allah has cursed, and he whom Allah curses, you will not find for him (any) helper,
4:53 Do they have control over shares of the kingdom? If so, they would not have given anyone so much as the speck on a date stone.
4:54 Are they jealous of the favors that Allah has done to some people? We have given to the family of Abraham the Book, Wisdom, and a great Kingdom.
4:55 Yet some believed in him while others turned away from him.1 Hell is sufficient as a torment!
4:56 Surely those who reject Our signs, We will cast them into the Fire. Whenever their skin is burnt completely, We will replace it so they will ˹constantly˺ taste the punishment. Indeed, Allah is Almighty, All-Wise.
4:57 As for those who believe and do good, We will admit them into Gardens under which rivers flow, to stay there forever and ever. There they will have pure spouses, and We will place them under a vast shade.
JUDGE WITH FAIRNESS
4:58 Indeed, Allah commands you to return trusts to their rightful owners; and when you judge between people, judge with fairness. What a noble commandment from Allah to you! Surely Allah is All-Hearing, All-Seeing.
4:59 O believers! Obey Allah and obey the Messenger and those in authority among you. Should you disagree on anything, then refer it to Allah and His Messenger, if you ˹truly˺ believe in Allah and the Last Day. This is the best and fairest resolution.
HYPOCRITES
4:60 Have you seen those (hypocrites) who claim that they believe in that which has been sent down to you, and that which was sent down before you, and they wish to go for judgment (in their disputes) to the Taghut (false judges, etc.) while they have been ordered to reject them. But Shaitan wishes to lead them far astray.
4:61 When it is said to them, “Come to Allah’s revelations and to the Messenger,” you see the hypocrites turn away from you stubbornly.
4:62 How ˹horrible˺ will it be if a disaster strikes them because of what their hands have done, then they come to you swearing by Allah, “We intended nothing but goodwill and reconciliation.”
4:63 ˹Only˺ Allah knows what is in their hearts. So turn away from them, caution them, and give them advice that will shake their very souls.
4:64 We only sent messengers to be obeyed by Allah’s Will. If only those ˹hypocrites˺ came to you ˹O Prophet˺—after wronging themselves—seeking Allah’s forgiveness and the Messenger prayed for their forgiveness, they would have certainly found Allah ever Accepting of Repentance, Most Merciful.
OBEY PROPHET MUHAMMAD’S COMMANDS
4:65 I swear by your Lord that they will not be considered believers until they make you (Muhammad) judge in all disputes between them, and find in themselves no resistance against your decisions, and accept (them) with full submission.
4:66 And if We had ordered them (saying), "Kill yourselves or leave your homes," very few of them would have done it; but if they had done what they were told, it would have been better for them, and would have strengthened their (Faith);
4:67 And then We would have given them from Us a great reward.
4:68 And We would have guided them to a straight path.
4:69 And whoever obeys Allah and the Messenger will be in the company of those blessed by Allah: the prophets, the people of truth, the martyrs, and the righteous—what honorable company!
4:70 That is the favor from Allah, and sufficient is Allah as Knower.
FIGHT FOR THE CAUSE OF ALLAH
4:71 O you who have believed, take your precaution and [either] go forth in companies or go forth all together.
4:72 There will be some among you who will lag behind so that if you face a disaster, they will say, “Allah has blessed us for not being there among them.”
4:73 But if a bounty (victory) comes to you from Allah, he would surely say - as if there had never been ties of affection between you and him - "Oh! I wish I had been with them; then I would have achieved great success."
4:74 Let those who would sacrifice this life for the Hereafter fight in the cause of Allah. And whoever fights in Allah’s cause—whether they achieve martyrdom or victory—We will honor them with a great reward.
4:75 And what is wrong with you that you fight not in the Cause of Allah, and for those weak, and oppressed among men, women, and children, whose cry is: "Our Lord! Rescue us from this town whose people are oppressors; and raise for us from You one who will protect, and raise for us from You one who will help."
4:76 Believers fight for the cause of Allah, whereas disbelievers fight for the cause of the Shaitan. So fight against Shaitan’s ˹evil˺ forces. Indeed, Shaitan’s schemes are ever weak.
4:77 Have you not seen those who were told to hold back their hands (from fighting) and perform As-Salat, and give Zakat,When they were ordered to fight, some of them feared other men as much as or more than they feared God and so they said, "Lord, why have you ordered us to fight? If only you would give us a little time." (Muhammad), tell them,“The enjoyment of this world is so little, whereas the Hereafter is far better for those mindful ˹of Allah˺. And none of you will be wronged ˹even by the width of˺ the thread of a date stone.
DEATH WILL OVERTAKE YOU WHEREVER YOU ARE
4:78 "Wherever you may be, death will overtake you even if you are in fortresses built up strong and high!" And if some good reaches them, they say, "This is from Allah," but if some evil befalls them, they say, "This is from you (O Muhammad SAW)." Say: "All things are from Allah," so what is wrong with these people that they fail to understand any word?
4:79 Whatever of good reaches you, is from Allah, but whatever of evil befalls you (O man), is from yourself. And We have sent you (O Muhammad SAW) as a Messenger to mankind, and Allah is Sufficient as a Witness.
4:80 He who obeys the Messenger (Muhammad SAW), has indeed obeyed Allah, but he who turns away, then we have not sent you (O Muhammad SAW) as a watcher over them.
4:81They say: "We are obedient," but when they leave you (Muhammad SAW), a section of them spend all night in planning other than what you say. But Allah records their nightly (plots). So turn aside from them (do not punish them), and put your trust in Allah. And Allah is Ever AllSufficient as a Disposer of affairs.
4:82 Will they not ponder on the Quran? Had it been from other than Allah, they would surely have found therein much contradictions.
4:83 And when they hear news of security or fear, they publicize it. Had they referred it to the Messenger or their authorities, those with sound judgment among them would have validated it. Had it not been for Allah’s grace and mercy, you would have followed Satan—except for a few.
4:84 Then fight (O Muhammad SAW) in the Cause of Allah, you are not tasked (held responsible) except for yourself, and incite the believers (to fight along with you), it may be that Allah will restrain the evil might of the disbelievers. And Allah is Stronger in Might and Stronger in punishing.
4:85Whoever intercedes for a good cause will have a share in the reward, and whoever intercedes for an evil cause will have a share in the burden. And Allah is Watchful over all things.
GREET WITH BETTER GREETINGS
4:86 And when you are greeted, respond with a better greeting or at least similarly. Surely Allah is Ever a Careful Account Taker of all things.
4:87 Allah, there is no god ˹worthy of worship˺ except Him. He will certainly gather ˹all of˺ you together on the Day of Judgment—about which there is no doubt. And whose word is more truthful than Allah’s?
4:88 Then what is the matter with you that you are divided into two parties about the hypocrites? Allah has cast them back (to disbelief) because of what they have earned. Do you want to guide him whom Allah has made to go astray? And he whom Allah has made to go astray, you will never find for him any way (of guidance).
4:89 They wish that you reject Faith, as they have rejected (Faith), and thus that you all become equal (like one another). So do not take them as allies unless they emigrate in the cause of Allah. But if they turn back (from Islam), take (hold) of them and kill them wherever you find them, and take neither friends nor helpers from them.
4:90 except those who are allies of a people you are bound with in a treaty or those wholeheartedly opposed to fighting either you or their own people. If Allah had willed, He would have empowered them to fight you. So if they refrain from fighting you and offer you peace, then Allah does not permit you to harm them.
4:91 You will find others who wish to be safe from you and their own people. but when they are invited to return to idol worship, they do so enthusiastically. If they do not keep away, offer you peace, or refrain from attacking you, then seize them and kill them wherever you find them. We have given you full permission over such people.
KILL BY MISTAKE
4:92 It is not for a believer to kill a believer except (that it be) by mistake, and whosoever kills a believer by mistake, (it is ordained that) he must set free a believing slave and a compensation (blood money, i.e Diya) be given to the deceased's family, unless they remit it. If the deceased belonged to a people at war with you and he was a believer; the freeing of a believing slave (is prescribed), and if he belonged to a people with whom you have a treaty of mutual alliance, compensation (blood money - Diya) must be paid to his family, and a believing slave must be freed. And whoso finds this (the penance of freeing a slave) beyond his means, he must fast for two consecutive months in order to seek repentance from Allah. And Allah is Ever AllKnowing, AllWise.
KILL INTENTIONALLY
4:93 And whoever kills a believer intentionally, their reward will be Hell—where they will stay indefinitely. Allah will be displeased with them, condemn them, and will prepare for them a tremendous punishment.
4:94 Believers, if you march with arms for the cause of God, make sure that you know whom to fight. Do not accuse anyone who claims himself to be a Muslim of disbelief just for worldly gains. There is an abundant bounty with God. Before, you were also like them, but God bestowed His favors upon you. Thus, make sure that you know whom to fight. God is Well Aware of what you do.
4:95 Those who stay at home—except those with valid excuses—are not equal to those who strive in the cause of Allah with their wealth and their lives. Allah has elevated in rank those who strive with their wealth and their lives above those who stay behind ˹with valid excuses˺. Allah has promised each a fine reward, but those who strive will receive a far better reward than others—
4:96 far superior ranks, forgiveness, and mercy from Him. And Allah is All-Forgiving, Most Merciful.
IMMIGRATE IN THE CAUSE OF ALLAH
4:97 Verily! As for those whom the angels take (in death) while they are wronging themselves (as they stayed among the disbelievers even though emigration was obligatory for them), they (angels) say (to them): "In what (condition) were you?" They reply: "We were weak and oppressed on earth." They (angels) say: "Was not the earth of Allah spacious enough for you to emigrate therein?" Such men will find their abode in Hell - What an evil destination!
4:98 Except the weak ones among men, women and children who cannot devise a plan, nor are they able to direct their way.
4:99 For these there is hope that Allah will forgive them, and Allah is Ever Oft Pardoning, Oft-Forgiving.
4:100 Whoever emigrates in the cause of Allah will find many safe havens and bountiful resources throughout the earth. Those who leave their homes and die while emigrating to Allah and His Messenger—their reward has already been secured with Allah. And Allah is All-Forgiving, Most Merciful.
QASAR NAMAZ
4:101 And when you (Muslims) travel in the land, there is no sin on you if you shorten your Salat (prayer) if you fear that the disbelievers may attack you, verily, the disbelievers are ever unto you open enemies.
PRAYERS DURING BATTLES
4:102 When you (O Messenger Muhammad SAW) are among them, and lead them in As-Salat (the prayer), let one party of them stand up [in Salat (prayer)] with you taking their arms with them; when they finish their prostrations, let them take their positions in the rear and let the other party come up which has not yet prayed, and let them pray with you taking all the precautions and bearing arms. Those who disbelieve wish, if you were negligent of your arms and your baggage, to attack you in a single rush, but there is no sin on you if you put away your arms because of the inconvenience of rain or because you are ill, but take every precaution for yourselves. Verily, Allah has prepared a humiliating torment for the disbelievers.
4:103 When the prayers are over, remember Allah—whether you are standing, sitting, or lying down. But when you are secure, establish regular prayers. Indeed, performing prayers is a duty on the believers at the appointed times.
4:104 And don't be weak in the pursuit of the enemy; if you are suffering (hardships) then surely, they (too) are suffering (hardships) as you are suffering, but you have a hope from Allah (for the reward, i.e. Paradise) that for which they hope not, and Allah is Ever AllKnowing, AllWise.
4:105 Indeed, We have sent down the Book to you ˹O Prophet˺ in truth to judge between people by means of what Allah has shown you. So do not be an advocate for the deceitful.
4:106 And seek Allah’s forgiveness—indeed, Allah is All-Forgiving, Most Merciful.
4:107 Do not advocate for those who wrong themselves. Surely Allah does not like those who are deceitful, sinful.
4:108 They may hide (their crimes) from men, but they cannot hide (them) from Allah, for He is with them (by His Knowledge), when they plot by night in words that He does not approve, And Allah ever encompasses what they do.
4:109 Here you are! You ˹believers˺ are advocating for them in this life, but who will ˹dare to˺ advocate for them before Allah on the Day of Judgment? Or who will come to their defense?
4:110 Whoever commits evil or wrongs themselves then seeks Allah’s forgiveness will certainly find Allah All-Forgiving, Most Merciful.
4:111 And whoever commits a sin—it is only to their own loss. Allah is All-Knowing, All-Wise.
ACCUSED INNOCENT
4:112 And whoever commits an evil or sinful deed then blames it on an innocent person, they will definitely bear the guilt of slander and grave sin.
4:113 And if it was not for the favor of Allah upon you, [O Muḥammad], and His mercy, a group of them would have been determined to mislead you. But they do not mislead except themselves, and they will not harm you at all. And Allah has revealed to you the Book and wisdom and has taught you that which you did not know. And ever has the favor of Allah upon you been great.
4:114 There is no good in most of their secret talks—except those encouraging charity, kindness, or reconciliation between people. And whoever does this seeking Allah’s pleasure, We will grant them a great reward.
4:115 And whoever defies the Messenger after guidance has become clear to them and follows a path other than that of the believers, We will let them pursue what they have chosen, then burn them in Hell—what an evil end!
4:116 Surely Allah does not forgive associating ˹others˺ with Him ˹in worship˺, but forgives anything else of whoever He wills. Indeed, whoever associates ˹others˺ with Allah has clearly gone far astray.
4:117 They call upon instead of Him none but female [deities], and they [actually] call upon none but a rebellious Shaitan,
SHAITAN
4:118 Allah cursed him. And he [Shaitan said]: "I will take an appointed portion of your slaves;
4:119 Verily, I will mislead them, and surely, I will arouse in them false desires; and certainly, I will order them to slit the ears of cattle, and indeed I will order them to change the nature created by Allah." And whoever takes Shaitan as a Wali (protector or helper) instead of Allah, has surely suffered a manifest loss.
4:120 He [Shaitan] makes promises to them, and arouses in them false desires; and Shaitan's promises are nothing but deceptions.
4:121 The dwelling of such (people) is Hell, and they will find no way of escape from it.
4:122 And those who believe and do good, We will soon admit them into Gardens under which rivers flow, to stay there forever and ever. Allah’s promise is ˹always˺ true. And whose word is more truthful than Allah’s?
4:123 It will not be in accordance with your desires, nor the desires of the People of the Scripture. Whoever commits evil will be rewarded accordingly, and they will find no protector or helper besides Allah.
4:124 But those who do good—whether male or female—and have faith will enter Paradise and will never be wronged ˹even as much as˺ the speck on a date stone.
4:125 And who is better in faith than those who ˹fully˺ submit themselves to Allah, do good, and follow the Way of Ibrahim, the upright? Allah chose Ibrahim as a close friend.
4:126 To Allah ˹alone˺ belongs whatever is in the heavens and whatever is on the earth. And Allah is Fully Aware of everything.
JUSTICE/ KHULA
4:127 And they request from you, [O Muhammad], a ruling concerning women. Say, " Allah gives you a ruling about them and [about] what has been recited to you in the Book concerning the orphan girls to whom you do not give what is decreed for them - and [yet] you desire to marry them - and concerning the oppressed among children and that you maintain for orphans [their rights] in justice." And whatever you do of good - indeed, Allah is ever Knowing of it.
4:128 If a woman fears indifference or neglect from her husband, there is no blame on either of them if they seek ˹fair˺ settlement, which is best. Humans are ever inclined to selfishness. But if you are gracious and mindful ˹of Allah˺, surely Allah is All-Aware of what you do.
TREAT YOUR WIVES WITH JUSTICE IF YOU MARRY MORE THAN ONE
4:129 You will never be able to maintain ˹emotional˺ justice between your wives—no matter how keen you are. So do not totally incline towards one leaving the other in suspense. And if you do what is right and are mindful ˹of Allah˺, surely Allah is All-Forgiving, Most Merciful.
4:130 But if they separate (by divorce), Allah will provide abundance for everyone of them from His Bounty. And Allah is Ever AllSufficient for His creatures' need, AllWise.
4:131 And to Allah belongs all that is in the heavens and all that is in the earth. And verily, We have recommended to the people of the Scripture before you, and to you (O Muslims) that you (all) fear Allah, and keep your duty to Him, But if you disbelieve, then unto Allah belongs all that is in the heavens and all that is in the earth, and Allah is Ever Rich (Free of all wants), Worthy of all praise.
4:132 And to Allah belongs all that is in the heavens and all that is in the earth. And Allah is Ever AllSufficient as a Disposer of affairs.
4:133 If it is His Will, He can remove you altogether, O humanity, and replace you with others. And Allah is Most Capable to do so.
4:134 Whoever desires the reward of this world, then ˹let them know that˺ with Allah are the rewards of this world and the Hereafter. And Allah is All-Hearing, All-Seeing.
GIVE TRUE TESTIMONY
4:135 O you who believe! Stand out firmly for justice, as witnesses to Allah, even though it be against yourselves, or your parents, or close relatives, be they rich or poor, Allah is a Better Protector to both (than you). Let not your desires cause you to commit injustice. If you deviate from the truth in your testimony, or decline to give your testimony at all, know that Allah is Well Aware of what you do.
4:136 O you who believe! Believe in Allah, and His Messenger (Muhammad SAW), and the Book (the Quran) which He has sent down to His Messenger, and the Scripture which He sent down to those before (him), and whosoever disbelieves in Allah, His Angels, His Books, His Messengers, and the Last Day, then indeed he has strayed far away.
4:137 Indeed, those who believed then disbelieved, then believed and again disbelieved—˹only˺ increasing in disbelief—Allah will neither forgive them nor guide them to the ˹Right˺ Way.
4:138 Give to the hypocrites the tidings that there is for them a painful torment.
4:139 Those who take disbelievers for Auliya' (protectors or helpers or friends) instead of believers, do they seek honor, power and glory with them? Verily, then to Allah belongs all honor, power and glory.
DO NOT SIT WITH HYPOCRITES
4:140 Allah has told you (believers) in the Book that when you hear people disbelieving and mocking Allah's revelations, do not sit with them unless they change the subject. You will become like them. Allah will gather all the hypocrites and the disbelievers together in hell fire.
4:141 The hypocrites are˺ those who wait to see what happens to you. So if Allah grants you victory, they say ˹to you˺, “Were we not on your side?” But if the disbelievers have a share ˹of victory˺, they say ˹to them˺, “Did we not have the advantage over you, yet we protected you from the believers?” Allah will judge between ˹all of˺ you on the Day of Judgment. And Allah will never grant the disbelievers a way over the believers.
PRAY TO ONLY SHOW OFF
4:142 Verily, the hypocrites seek to deceive Allah, but it is He Who deceives them. And when they stand up for As-Salat, they stand with laziness and to be seen of men, and they do not remember Allah but little.
4:143 Torn between belief and disbelief—belonging neither to these ˹believers˺ nor those ˹disbelievers˺. And whoever Allah leaves to stray, you will never find for them a way.
4:144 O you who believe! Take not for Auliya' (protectors or helpers or friends) disbelievers instead of believers. Would you like to give Allah solid proof against yourselves?
4:145 Verily, the hypocrites will be in the lowest depths (grade) of the Fire; no helper will you find for them.
4:146 Except those who repent (from hypocrisy), do righteous good deeds, hold fast to Allah, and purify their religion for Allah (by worshiping none but Allah, and do good for Allah's sake only, not to show-off), then they will be with the believers. And Allah will grant to the believers a great reward.
4:147 Why should Allah punish you if you have thanked (Him) and have believed in Him. And Allah is Ever AllAppreciative (of good), AllKnowing.
END OF FIFTH CHAPTER
4:148 Allah does not like that evil should be uttered in public except by him who has been wronged. And Allah is Ever AllHearer, AllKnower.
4:149 If you do good openly or do it in secret or pardon an evil then surely Allah is Ever-Pardoning, Most Capable.
DISCRIMINATE MESSENGERS
4:150 Indeed, those who disbelieve in Allah and His messengers and wish to discriminate between Allah and His messengers and say, "We believe in some and disbelieve in others," and wish to adopt a way in between
4:151 They are indeed the true disbelievers. And We have prepared for the disbelievers a humiliating punishment.
4:152 And those who believe in Allah and His Messengers and make no distinction between any of them (Messengers), We shall give them their rewards, and Allah is Ever OftForgiving, Most Merciful.
PROPHET MUSA
4:153 The People of the Book demand that you ˹O Prophet˺ bring down for them a revelation in writing from heaven. They demanded what is even greater than this from Moses, saying, “Make Allah visible to us!” So a thunderbolt struck them for their wrongdoing. Then they took the calf for worship after receiving clear signs. Still We forgave them for that ˹after their repentance˺ and gave Musa a clear proof of authority.
4:154 And We raised over them the mount for [refusal of] their covenant; and We said to them, "Enter the gate bowing humbly", and We said to them, "Do not transgress on the sabbath", and We took from them a solemn covenant.
4:155 And [We cursed them] for their breaking of the covenant and their disbelief in the signs of Allah and their killing of the prophets without right and their saying, "Our hearts are wrapped". Rather, Allah has sealed them because of their disbelief, so they believe not, except for a few.
THEY DID NOT KILL NOR CRUCIFIED PROPHET ISA
4:156 And [We cursed them] for their disbelief and their saying against Mary a great slander,
4:157 And because of their saying (in boast), "We killed Messiah 'Isa, son of Maryam, the Messenger of Allah," - but they neither killed, nor crucified him, but the resemblance of 'Isa was put over another man (and they killed that man),And indeed, those who differ over it are in doubt about it. They have no knowledge of it except the following assumption. And they did not kill him, for certain.
4:158 Rather, Allah raised him up to Himself. And Allah is Almighty, All-Wise.
4:159 Every one of the People of the Book will definitely believe in him before his death. And on the Day of Judgment Jesus will be a witness against them.
4:160 For wrongdoing on the part of the Jews, We forbade certain foods that had been lawful to them for their wrongdoing, and for hindering many from the Way of Allah
4:161 Taking interest despite its prohibition, and consuming people’s wealth unjustly. We have prepared for the disbelievers among them a painful punishment.
4:162 But those firm in knowledge among them(Jews), and the believers ˹who˺ believe in what has been revealed to you ˹O Prophet˺ and what was revealed before you—˹especially˺ those who establish prayer—and those who give zakat and believe in Allah and the Last Day, to these ˹people˺ We will grant a great reward.
ALLAH SENT REVELATION THROUGH HIS MESSENGERS TO THE MANKIND
4:163 Verily, We have inspired you (O Muhammad SAW) as We inspired Nuh and the Prophets after him; We (also) inspired Ibrahim, Isma'il, Ishaque, Ya'qub, and AlAsbat [the twelve sons of Ya'qub, 'Iesa, Ayub, Yunus, Harun, and Sulaiman, and to Dawud We gave the Zabur (Psalms).
4:164 (We sent revelations to) the Messengers mentioned to you before and also to Messengers who have not been mentioned to you. And to Musa Allah spoke directly.
4:165. All were˺ messengers delivering good news and warnings, so humanity should have no excuse before Allah after ˹the coming of˺ the messengers. And Allah is Almighty, All-Wise.
4:166 But Allah bears witness to that which He has sent down (the Quran) unto you (O Muhammad SAW), He has sent it down with His Knowledge, and the angels bear witness. And Allah is All-Sufficient as a Witness.
4:167 Verily, those who disbelieve and prevent (mankind) from the Path of Allah , they have certainly strayed far away.
4:168 Verily, those who disbelieve and did wrong , Allah will not forgive them, nor will He guide them to any path.
4:169 Except the path of Hell; they will abide therein forever. And that, for Allah, is [always] easy
4:170 O humanity! The Messenger has certainly come to you with the truth from your Lord, so believe for your own good. But if you disbelieve, then ˹know that˺ to Allah belongs whatever is in the heavens and the earth. And Allah is All-Knowing, All-Wise.
PROPHET ISA
4:171 O people of the Scripture (Jews and Christians)! Do not exceed the limits in your religion, say nothing about Allah except the truth. The Messiah 'Isa, son of Maryam, was (no more than) a Messenger of Allah and His Word, ("Be!" - and he was) which He bestowed on Maryam and a spirit (Ruh) created by Him; so believe in Allah and His Messengers. Say not: "Three (trinity)!" Cease! (it is) better for you. For Allah is (the only) One Ilah (God), Glory be to Him (Far Exalted is He) above having a son. To Him belongs all that is in the heavens and all that is in the earth. And Allah is AllSufficient as a Disposer of affairs.
4:172 The Messiah would never be too proud to be a servant of Allah, nor would the angels nearest to Allah. Those who are too proud and arrogant to worship Him will be brought before Him all together.
4:173 As for those who believe and do good, He will reward them in full and increase them out of His grace. But those who are too proud and arrogant, He will subject them to a painful punishment. And besides Allah they will find no protector or helper.
4:174 O mankind! Verily, there has come to you a convincing proof (Prophet Muhammad SAW) from your Lord, and We sent down to you a manifest light (this Quran).
4:175 As for those who believe in Allah and hold fast to Him, He will admit them into His mercy and grace and guide them to Himself through the Straight Path.
INHERITANCE WITH NO CHILDREN OR PARENTS
4:176 They ask you ˹for a ruling, O Prophet˺. Say, “Allah gives you a ruling regarding those who die without children or parents.” If a man dies childless and leaves behind a sister, she will inherit one-half of his estate, whereas her brother will inherit all of her estate if she dies childless. If this person leaves behind two sisters, they together will inherit two-thirds of the estate. But if the deceased leaves male and female siblings, a male’s share will be equal to that of two females. Allah makes ˹this˺ clear to you so you do not go astray. And Allah has ˹perfect˺ knowledge of all things.
