SURAH AL- IMRAN
The Family Of Imran
(Madnie, Surah # 3, Verses 200 )
3:1. Alif-Lam-Mim.
3:2. Allah! There is no god ˹worthy of worship˺ except Him—the Ever-Living, All-Sustaining.
QURAN
3:3. It is He Who has sent down the Book (the Qur’an) to you (Muhammad ) with truth, confirming what came before it. And he sent down the Taurat (Torah) and the Injeel (Gospel).
3:4. Before, as guidance for the people. And He revealed the Qur'an. Indeed, those who disbelieve in the verses of Allah will have a severe punishment, and Allah is exalted in Might, the Owner of Retribution.
3:5. Truly, nothing is hidden from Allah, in the earth or in the heavens.
3:6. He is the One Who shapes you in the wombs of your mothers as He wills. There is no God ˹worthy of worship˺ except Him—the Almighty, All-Wise.
3:7. It is He Who has sent down to you (Muhammad ) the Book (this Qur’an). In it are Verses that are entirely clear, they are the fundamental ideas of the Book [Ahkamat], Al-Fara’id [Mandate] and Al-Hudud (legal laws]; and others not entirely clear. So as for those in whose hearts there is a deviation (from the truth) they follow that which is not entirely clear, seeking Al-Fitnah, and seeking for its hidden meanings, but none knows its hidden meanings except Allah. And those who are firmly grounded in knowledge say: “We believe in it; All its verses are from our Lord." No one can grasp this fact except the people of reason.
3:8. (They say):
“Our Lord! Let not our hearts deviate (from the truth) after You have guided us, and grant us mercy from You. Truly, You are the Most Awarding One.
Our Lord! Verily, it is You Who will gather mankind together on the Day of Judgment about which there is no doubt. Verily, Allah never breaks His Promise”.
3:10. Indeed, neither the wealth nor children of the disbelievers will be of any benefit to them against Allah—and they will be the fuel for the Fire.
3:11. Like the behavior of the people of Fir’aun and those before them; they disbelieved Our Ayat, so Allah destroyed them for their sins. And Allah is Severe in punishment.
3:12. O Prophet!˺ Tell the disbelievers, “Soon you will be defeated and driven to Hell—what an evil place to rest!”
BATTLE OF BADR
3:13. Already there has been for you a sign in the two armies which met [in combat at Badr] - one fighting in the cause of Allah and another of disbelievers. They saw them [to be] twice their [own] number by [their] eyesight. But Allah supports with His victory whom He wills. Indeed in that, is a lesson for those of vision.
3:14.Worldly desires, wives, children, treasures of gold and silver, horses of noble breed, cattle, and farms are all made to seem attractive to men. All these are the pleasures of this worldly life but in the life to come Allah has the best place for people to dwell.
3:15. Say, ˹O Prophet,˺ “Shall I inform you of what is better than ˹all of˺ this? Those mindful ˹of Allah˺ will have Gardens with their Lord under which rivers flow, to stay there forever, and pure spouses, along with Allah’s pleasure.” And Allah is All-Seeing of ˹His˺ servants,
3:16. Those who say: رَبَّنَآ إِنَّنَآ ءَامَنَّا فَٱغْفِرْ لَنَا ذُنُوبَنَا وَقِنَا عَذَابَ ٱلنَّارِ
“Our Lord! We have indeed believed, so forgive us our sins and save us from the punishment of the Fire.”
3:17.They are those who are patient, sincere, and obedient with sincere devotion in worship to Allah. Those who spend and who pray for forgiveness in the last hour of the night(before dawn)
ALLAH HIMSELF WITNESS (TRUE RELIGION)
3:18. Allah ˹Himself˺ is a Witness that there is no God ˹worthy of worship˺ except Him and the angels, and those having knowledge. (He is always) maintaining His creation in Justice. There is no God ˹worthy of worship˺ except Him—the Almighty, All-Wise.
3:19. Truly, the religion with Allah is Islam. Those who were given the Scripture (Jews and Christians) did not differ except, out of mutual jealousy, after knowledge had come to them. And whoever disbelieves in the Ayat of Allah, then surely, Allah is Swift in calling to account.
CONVEY THE MESSAGE
3:20. So if they argue with you (Muhammad ) say: “I have submitted myself to Allah, and so have my followers.” And ask those who were given the Scripture (Jews and Christians) and to those who are illiterates (Arab pagans): “Have you submitted yourselves?” If they do, they are rightly guided; but if they turn away, your duty is only to convey the Message; and Allah is All-Seer of (His ) slaves.
DISBELIEVER
3:21. Verily! Those who disbelieve in the Ayat of Allah and kill the Prophets unjustly, and kill people who stand up for justice—give them good news of a painful punishment.
3:22. They are those whose deeds will be wasted in this world and in the Hereafter, and they will have no helpers.
3:23. Have you not seen those who have been given a portion of the Scripture? They are being invited to the Book of Allah to settle their dispute, then a party of them turns away, and they are refusing.
3:24. This is because they say: “The Fire shall not touch us but for a number of days.” This fabricated belief has deceived them in matters of their religion.
3:25. How (will it be) when We gather them together on the Day about which there is no doubt . And each person will be paid in full what he has earned? And they will not be dealt with unjustly.
BELIEVER
3:26. Say, "O Allah , Owner of Sovereignty, You give authority to whom You will and You take authority away from whom You will. You honor whom You will and You humble whom You will. In Your hand is [all] good. Indeed, You are Able to do all things.
3:27. You make the night to enter into the day, and You make the day to enter into the night. You bring the living out of the dead, and You bring the dead out of the living. And You give wealth and sustenance to whom You will, without limit (measure or account).
3:28. Let not the believers take the disbelievers as guardians instead of the believers, and whoever does that will never be helped by Allah in any way, except if you indeed fear a danger from them. And Allah warns you against Himself (His Punishment), and to Allah is the final return.
3:29. Say (O Muhammad ): “Whether you hide what is in your heart or reveal it, Allah knows it, and He knows what is in the heavens and what is in the earth. And Allah is Able to do all things.”
3:30.On the day when every soul will see its good and bad deeds right before its very eyes,, he will wish that there was a great distance between him and his evil. And Allah warns you against Himself (His Punishment) and Allah is full of Kindness to the (His) slaves.
3:31. Say (O Muhammad to mankind): “If you love Allah then follow me. Allah will love you and forgive you of your sins. And Allah is Oft-Forgiving, Most Merciful.”
3:32. Say (O Muhammad ): “Obey Allah and the Messenger.” But if they turn away, then Allah does not like the disbelievers.
FAMILY OF AL-IMRAN (FATHER OF MARYAM)
3:33. Allah chose Adam, Nuh, the family of Ibrahim and the family of ‘Imran above the ‘Alamin (of their times).
3:34. They are descendants of one another, and Allah is the All-Hearer, All-Knower.
3:35. ˹Remember˺ when the wife (Maryam’s mom) of ’Imrân said, “My Lord! I dedicate what is in my womb entirely to Your service, so accept it from me. You ˹alone˺ are truly the All-Hearing, All-Knowing.”
GLAD NEWS OF MARYAM
3:36. Then when she delivered, she said: “O my Lord! I have delivered a female child,” – and Allah knew better what she delivered, – “And the male is not like the female, and I have named her Maryam, and I seek refuge with You (Allah) for her and for her offspring from Shaitan , the accursed.”
3:37. So her Lord (Allah) accepted her with good acceptance. He made her grow in a good manner and put her under the care of Zakariya. Every time he entered Al-Mihrab to (visit) her , he found her supplied with sustenance. He said: “O Maryam! from where have you got this?” She said, “This is from Allah.” Verily, Allah provides sustenance to whom He wills, without limit.”
GLAD NEWS OF PROPHET YAHYA
3:38. At that time Zakariya prayed to his Lord, saying: “O my Lord! Grant me from You, a righteous offspring. You are indeed the All-Hearer of invocation.”
3:39. When he was standing during prayer in his place of worship, the angels called him saying, "Allah gives you the glad news of the birth of your son, Yahya, who will be a confirmation of (Jesus) the Word of God. He will become a chaste, noble leader and one of the righteous Prophets.
3:40. He said: “O my Lord! How can I have a son when I am very old, and my wife is barren?” Allah said: “Thus Allah does what He wills.”
3:41. He said: “O my Lord! Make a sign for me.” Allah said: “Your sign is that you shall not speak to mankind for three days except with signals. Remember your Lord often and glorify ˹Him˺ morning and evening.”
MARYAM (MOTHER OF ISA)
3:42. And (remember) when the angels said: “O Maryam! Verily, Allah has chosen you, purified you and chosen you above the women of the ‘Alamin.
3:43. O Mary! “Submit yourself with obedience to your Lord and prostrate yourself, and bow down along with those who bow down.”
3:44. That is from the news of the unseen which We reveal to you, [O Muhammad]. And you were not with them when they cast their pens as to which of them should be responsible for Mary. Nor were you with them when they disputed.
GLAD NEWS OF PROPHET ISA
3:45. [And mention] when the angels said, "O Mary, indeed Allah gives you good tidings of a word from Him, whose name will be the Messiah, Jesus, the son of Mary - distinguished in this world and the Hereafter and among those brought near [to Allah].
3:46. “He will speak to the people in the cradle and in adulthood, and he will be one of the righteous.”
3:47. She said: “O my Lord! How shall I have a son when no man has touched me.” He said: “So (it will be) for Allah creates what He wills. When He has decreed something, He says to it only: “Be!” and it is.
3:48. And He (Allah) will teach him [‘Isa] the Book and Al-Hikmah (and) the Taurat and the Injeel.
MIRACLES OF PROPHET ISA
3:49. He will be a Messenger of Allah to the Israelites to whom he will say, "I have brought you a miracle from your Lord. I can create for you something from clay in the form of a bird. When I blow into it, it will become a real bird, by the will of Allah. I can heal the blind and the lepers and bring the dead back to life, by the will of Allah. I can tell you about what you eat and what you store in your homes. This is a miracle for you if you want to have faith.
3:50. And I have come confirming that which was before me of the Taurat, and to make lawful to you part of what was forbidden to you, and I have come to you with a proof from your Lord. So fear Allah and obey me.
3:51. Truly! Allah is my Lord and your Lord, so worship Him (Alone). This is the Straight Path.
3:52. When Isa sensed disbelief from his people, he asked, “Who will stand up with me for Allah?” The disciples replied, “We will stand up for Allah. We believe in Allah, so bear witness that we have submitted.”
3:53. They prayed to Allah, رَبَّنَآ ءَامَنَّا بِمَآ أَنزَلْتَ وَٱتَّبَعْنَا ٱلرَّسُولَ فَٱكْتُبْنَا مَعَ ٱلشَّـٰهِدِينَ
Our Lord! We believe in what You have sent down, and we follow the Messenger [‘Isa]; so write us down among those who bear witness.
3:54. And they (disbelievers) plotted [to kill ‘Isa], and Allah planned too. And Allah is the Best of the planners.
ALLAH LIFT PROPHET ISA UP
3:55. And (remember) when Allah said: “O ‘Isa! I will take you and raise you to Myself and clear you of those who disbelieve, and I will make those who follow you superior to those who disbelieve till the Day of Resurrection. Then you will return to Me and I will judge between you in the matters in which you used to dispute.”
3:56. “As to those who disbelieve, I will punish them with a severe torment in this world and in the Hereafter, and they will have no helpers.”
3:57. And as for those who believe (in the Oneness of Allah) and do righteous good deeds, Allah will pay them their reward in full. And Allah does not like the Zalimun.
3:58. This is what We recite to you (O Muhammad ) of the Verses and the Wise Reminder.
ADAM AND ISA BOTH WERE BORNED WITHOUT FATHER
3:59. Verily, the likeness of ‘Isa before Allah is the likeness of Adam. He created him from dust, then (He) said to him: “Be!” – and he was.
3:60. (This is) the truth from your Lord, so be not of those who doubt.
3:61. Now, whoever disputes with you ˹O Prophet˺ concerning Jesus after full knowledge has come to you, say, “Come! Let us gather our children and your children, our women and your women, ourselves and yourselves—then let us sincerely invoke Allah’s curse upon the liars.”
3:62. Verily! This is the true narrative [about the story of ‘Isa (Jesus)], and there is no God ˹worthy of worship˺ except Allah. And indeed, Allah is the All-Mighty, the All-Wise.
3:63. And if they turn away , then surely, Allah is All-Aware of those who do mischief.
PEOPLE OF SCRIPTURE (JEWS AND CHRISTIANS)
3:64. Say (O Muhammad ): “O people of the Scripture (Jews and Christians): Come to a word that is just between us and you, that we worship none but Allah, and that we associate no partners with Him, and that none of us shall take others as lords besides Allah. Then, if they turn away, say: “Bear witness that we are Muslims.”
THEY DISPUTED ABOUT PROPHET IBRAHIM
3:65. O people of the Scripture (Jews and Christians)! Why do you argue about Ibrahim, while the Taurat and the Injeel were not revealed until long after him? Do you not understand?
3:66. Here you are! You disputed about what you have ˹little˺ knowledge of but why do you now argue about what you have no knowledge of? Allah knows and you do not know.
3:67. Ibrahim was neither a Jew nor a Christian, but he was a true Muslim and he was not of Al-Mushrikun.
3:68. Verily, among mankind who are nearest to Ibrahim are those who followed him, and this Prophet (Muhammad ) and the true believers. And Allah is the Wali of the believers.
CHRISTIAN & JEWS IN QURAN
3:69. A party of the people of the Scripture wish to mislead you. But they shall not mislead anyone except themselves, and they perceive not.
3:70. O people of the Scripture! “Why do you disbelieve in the Ayat of Allah, [the Verses about Prophet Muhammad] while you (yourselves) bear witness (to their truth).”
3:71. O people of the Scripture: “Why do you mix truth with falsehood and conceal the truth while you know?”
3:72. And a party of the people of the Scripture say: “Believe in the morning in that which is revealed to the believers (Muslims), and reject it at the end of the day, so that they may turn back.
3:73. They also say Do not believe anyone except those who follow your religion. Say (O Muhammad ): “Verily! Right guidance is the Guidance of Allah” and do not believe that anyone can receive like that which you have received (of Revelation) except when he follows your religion, otherwise they would engage you in argument before your Lord. Say (O Muhammad ): “All the bounty is in the Hand of Allah; He grants to whom He wills. And Allah is All-Sufficient for His creatures’ needs, the All-Knower.”
3:74. He chooses whoever He wills to receive His mercy. And Allah is the Lord of infinite bounty.
3:75. There are some among the People of the Book who, if entrusted with a stack of gold, will readily return it. Yet there are others who, if entrusted with a single coin, will not repay it unless you constantly demand it. This is because they say, “"There is no blame on us to betray and take the properties of the illiterates (Arabs)." But they tell a lie against Allah while they know it.
3:76. Those who keep their promise and observe piety should know that God certainly loves the pious ones.
3:77. Verily, those who purchase a small gain at the cost of Allah’s Covenant and their oaths, they shall have no portion in the Hereafter (Paradise). Neither will Allah speak to them, nor look at them on the Day of Resurrection, nor will He purify them, and they shall have a painful torment.
3:78. A group among the People of the Book when reading the Bible, deliberately mispronounce words in order to change their meaning, try to show that what they have read is from the true Bible. In fact, what they have read is not from the true Bible. They say, "What we read is from Allah." In reality, it is not from Allah. They knowingly ascribe false statements to Allah.
3:79. It is not (possible) for any human being to whom Allah has given the Book and Wisdom and Prophethood to say to the people: “Worship me instead of Allah.” Rather, he would say, “Be devoted to the worship of your Lord ˹alone˺”—in accordance with what these prophets read in the Scripture and what they taught.
3:80. Nor would he order you to take angels and Prophets for lords (gods). Would he order you to disbelieve after you have submitted to Allah’s Will?
COVENANT WITH PREVIOUS PROPHETS BEFORE PROPHET MUHAMMAD
3:81. And ˹Remember˺ when Allah made a covenant with the prophets, ˹saying,˺ “Now that I have given you the Book and wisdom, if there comes to you a messenger (Muhammad ) confirming what is with you; you must, then, believe in him and support him.” Allah said: “Do you agree (to it) and will you take up My Covenant?” They said: “We agree.” He said: “Then bear witness; and I am with you among the witnesses (for this).”
3:82. Then whoever turns away after this, they are the Fasiqun (disobedient)
3:83. Do they seek other than the religion of Allah, while to Him submitted all creatures in the heavens and the earth, willingly or unwillingly. And to Him shall they all be returned.
BELIEVING IN ALL PROPHETS
3:84. Say (O Muhammad ): “We believe in Allah and in what has been sent down to us, and what was sent down to Ibrahim, Isma’il, Ishaque, Ya’qub and Al-Asbat [the twelve sons of Ya’qub (Jacob)] and what was given to Musa, ‘Isa and the Prophets from their Lord. We make no distinction between one another among them and to Him (Allah) we have submitted (in Islam).”
3:85. And whoever seeks a religion other than Islam, it will never be accepted from them, and in the Hereafter he will be one of the losers.
PEOPLE WHO DISBELIEVED AFTER THEY BELIEF
3:86. How shall Allah guide a people who disbelieved after they had believed and acknowledged the Messenger (Muhammad ) is true and after clear proofs had come to them? And Allah guides not the people who are Zalimun.
3:87. They are those whose recompense is that on them the Curse of Allah, of the angels, and of all mankind.
3:88. They will be in Hell forever. Their punishment will not be lightened, nor will they be delayed ˹from it˺.
3:89. Except for those who repent after that and do righteous deeds. Verily, Allah is Oft-Forgiving, Most Merciful.
3:90. Indeed, those who disbelieve after having believed, then increase in disbelief, their repentance will never be accepted. It is they who are astray.
3:91. Indeed, if each of those who disbelieved then die as disbelievers were to offer a ransom of enough gold to fill the whole world, it would never be accepted from them. It is they who will suffer a painful punishment, and they will have no helpers.
END OF THIRD CHAPTER
3:92. You will never achieve righteousness until you donate some of what you love. And whatever you give is certainly well known to Allah.
3:93. All food was lawful to the Children of Israel, except what Israel made unlawful for himself before the Taurat was revealed. Say (O Muhammad): “Bring here the Taurat and recite it, if you are truthful.”
3:94. Then after that, whosoever shall invent a lie against Allah, … such shall indeed be the wrongdoers.
3:95. Say (O Muhammad): “Allah has spoken the truth; follow the religion of Ibrahim, and he was not of Al-Mushrikun.”
KABAH (HOUSE OF ALLAH)
3:96. Verily, the first House (of worship) appointed for mankind was that at Makkah, full of blessing, and a guidance for Al-‘Alamin (the mankind and jinns).
HAJJ
3:97. In it are manifest signs, the Maqam of Ibrahim; whosoever enters it, he attains security. And Hajj to the House (Ka’bah) is a duty that mankind owes to Allah, those who can afford the expenses and whoever disbelieves then he is a disbeliever of Allah, then Allah stands not in need of any of the ‘Alamin.
3:98. Say: “O people of the Scripture! Why do you reject the Ayat of Allah while Allah is Witness to what you do?”
3:99. Say: “O people of the Scripture! Why do you stop those who have believed, from the Path of Allah, seeking to make it seem crooked, while you (yourselves) are witnesses And Allah is not unaware of what you do.”
3:100. O you who believe! If you obey a group of those who were given the Scripture (Jews and Christians), they would (indeed) turn you back from belief to disbelief.
3:101. And how would you disbelieve, while unto you are recited the Verses of Allah, and among you is His Messenger? And whoever holds firmly to Allah, then he is indeed guided to a Right Path.
3:102. O you who believe! Fear Allah as He should be feared and die not except in a state of Islam with complete submission to Allah.
ROPE OF ALLAH
3:103. And hold firmly to the rope (Quran & Sunnah) of Allah all together and do not become divided. And remember the favor of Allah upon you - when you were enemies and He brought your hearts together and you became, by His favor, brothers. And you were on the edge of a pit of the Fire, and He saved you from it. Thus does Allah make clear to you His verses that you may be guided.
3:104. Let there be a group among you who call ˹others˺ to goodness, encourage what is good, and forbid what is evil—it is they who will be successful.
3:105. And do not be like the ones who became divided and differed after the clear proofs had come to them. And those will have a great punishment.
3:106. On the Day (i.e. the Day of Resurrection) when some faces will become white and some faces will become black; as for those whose faces will become black (to them will be said): “Did you reject Faith after accepting it? Then taste the torment (in Hell) for rejecting Faith.”
3:107. And for those whose faces will become white, they will be in Allah’s Mercy (Paradise), therein they shall dwell forever.
3:108. These are the Verses of Allah: We recite them to you (O Muhammad) in truth, and Allah wills no injustice to the ‘Alamin.
3:109. And to Allah belongs all that is in the heavens and all that is in the earth. And all matters go back (for decision) to Allah for Judgment.
MUSLIMS
3:110. You are the best community ever raised for humanity—you encourage good, forbid evil, and believe in Allah. Had the People of the Book believed it would have been better for them. Some of them are faithful, but most are rebellious.
3:111. They will not harm you except for [some] annoyance. and if they fight against you, they will show you their backs, and they will not be helped.
3:112. They will be stricken with disgrace wherever they go, unless they are protected by a covenant with Allah or a treaty with the people. They have invited the displeasure of Allah and have been branded with misery for rejecting Allah’s revelations and murdering ˹His˺ prophets unjustly. This is ˹a fair reward˺ for their disobedience and violations.
PIOUS PEOPLE AMONG THE PEOPLE OF THE BOOK
3:113. Yet they are not all alike: there are some among the People of the Book who are upright, who recite Allah’s revelations throughout the night, prostrating ˹in prayer˺.
3:114. They believe in Allah and the Last Day, encourage good and forbid evil, and race with one another in doing good. They are ˹truly˺ among the righteous.
3:115. And whatever good they do; nothing will be rejected of them; for Allah knows well those who are Al-Muttaqun.
3:116. Indeed, neither the wealth nor children of the disbelievers will be of any benefit to them against Allah. It is they who will be the residents of the Fire. They will be there forever.
3:117. The good they do in this worldly life is like the harvest of an evil people struck by a bitter wind, destroying it ˹completely˺. Allah never wronged them, but they wronged themselves.
DO NOT MAKE DISBELIEVERS AS A FRIEND
3:118. O you who believe! Take not as (advisors, consultants, protectors, helpers, friends, etc.) those outside your religion. They like to mislead you and see that you are seriously harmed. Hatred has already appeared from their mouths, but what their heart conceals is far worse. Indeed We have made clear to you the Ayat if you understand.
3:119. Here you are who love them but they love you not, and you believe in all the Scriptures, while they disbelieve in your Book, [the Qur’an]. And when they meet you, they say, “We believe”. But when they are alone, they bite the tips of their fingers at you in rage. Say: “Die in your rage. Certainly, Allah knows what is in the breasts (all the secrets).”
3:120. If good touches you, it distresses them; but if harm strikes you, they rejoice at it. And if you are patient and fear Allah, their plot will not harm you at all. Indeed, Allah is encompassing of what they do.
BATTLE OF UHUD
3:121. ˹Remember, O Prophet,˺ when you left your home in the early morning to position the believers in the battlefield. And Allah is All-Hearing, All-Knowing.
3:122. When two parties among you were about to lose courage, but Allah was their Wali (Supporter and Protector). And in Allah should the believers put their trust.
3:123. And Allah has already made you victorious at Badr, when you were a weak little force. So fear Allah much that you may be grateful.
3:124. Also, remember when you said to the believers, "Is it not enough that your Lord is helping you with a force of three thousand angels sent (from the heavens)?"
3:125. Most certainly, if you ˹believers˺ are firm and mindful ˹of Allah˺ and the enemy launches a sudden attack on you, Allah will reinforce you with five thousand angels designated ˹for battle˺.
3:126. Allah made it not but as a message of good news for you and as an assurance to your hearts. And there is no victory except from Allah, the All-Mighty, the All-Wise.
3:127. to destroy a group of the disbelievers and humble the rest, causing them to withdraw in disappointment.
3:128. You ˹O Prophet˺ have no say in the matter. It is up to Allah to turn to them in mercy or punish them, for indeed they are wrongdoers.
3:129. And to Allah belongs all that is in the heavens and all that is in the earth. He forgives whom He wills, and punishes whom He wills. And Allah is Oft-Forgiving, Most Merciful.
RIBA
3:130. O you who believe! Eat not Riba (usury) doubled and multiplied, but fear Allah that you may be successful.
3:131. And fear the Fire, which is prepared for the disbelievers.
3:132. And obey Allah and the Messenger that you may obtain mercy.
3:133. Hasten to obtain forgiveness from your Lord and to qualify yourselves for Paradise. Paradise, as wide as the heavens and the earth, is prepared for the pious .
CHARITY
3:134. Who spend [in the cause of Allah] during ease and hardship and who restrain anger and who pardon the people - and Allah loves the doers of good;
SEEK FORGIVENESS AFTER COMMITTING SINS
3:135. And those who, when they have committed Fahishah or wronged themselves with evil, remember Allah and ask forgiveness for their sins; – and none can forgive sins but Allah – And do not persist in what (wrong) they have done, while they know.
3:136. Their reward is forgiveness from their Lord and Gardens under which rivers flow, staying there forever. How excellent is the reward for those who work ˹righteousness
3:137. Similar situations [as yours] have passed on before you, so proceed throughout the earth and observe how was the end of those who denied.
QURAN
3:138. This (the Qur’an) is a plain statement for mankind, a guidance and instruction to those who are Al-Muttaqun.
BATTLEFIELD- MARTYR
3:139. So do not become weak (against your enemy), nor be sad, and you will be superior (in victory) if you are indeed (true) believers.
3:140. If you have suffered injuries ˹at Uḥud˺, they suffered similarly ˹at Badr˺. We alternate these days ˹of victory and defeat˺ among people so that Allah may reveal the ˹true˺ believers, choose martyrs from among you—and Allah does not like the wrongdoers
3:141. And that Allah may test (or purify) the believers (from sins) and destroy the disbelievers.
3:142. Do you think that you will enter Paradise before Allah tests those of you who fought (in His Cause) and (also) tests those who are As-Sabirin (the patient ones, etc.)?
3:143. You did indeed wish for death (Ash-Shahada – martyrdom) before you met it. Now you have seen it openly with your own eyes.
3:144. Muhammad is no more than a Messenger, and indeed (many) Messengers have passed away before him. If he dies or is killed, will you then turn back on your heels (as disbelievers)? And he who turns back on his heels, not the least harm will he do to Allah, and Allah will give reward to those who are grateful.
APPOINTED TERM FOR LIFE
3:145. No one can die without the permission of Allah. This is a written decree of the appointed term for life. We shall give worldly gains to whoever wants them. Those who want rewards in the life hereafter will also receive them. We reward those who give thanks.
3:146. Many religious scholars fought to help the Prophets in the cause of Allah. They did not lose courage, show weakness, or give in when facing hardships in their fight for the cause of Allah. Allah loves those who have patience.
3:147. And all they said was,
“Our Lord! Forgive our sins and excesses, make our steps firm, and grant us victory over the disbelieving people.”
3:148. So Allah gave them the reward of this world, and the excellent reward of the Hereafter. And Allah loves Al-Muhsinun (the good-doers).
NEVER OBEY DISBELIEVERS
3:149. O you who believe! If you obey those who disbelieve, they will drag you back to disbelief—and you will become losers.
3:150. Nay, Allah is your Protector, and He is the Best of helpers.
ASSOCIATING FALSE GODS
3:151. We will cast terror into the hearts of the disbelievers for associating ˹false gods˺ with Allah—a practice He has never authorized. The Fire will be their home—what an evil place for the wrongdoers to stay!
BATTLE OF UHUD
3:152. And Allah had certainly fulfilled His promise to you when you were killing them [enemy] by His permission until when you lost courage and fell to disputing about the order [given by the Prophet] and disobeyed after He had shown you that which you love(batul-mal) Among you are some who desire this world, and among you are some who desire the Hereafter. Then He turned you back from them [defeated] that He might test you. And He has already forgiven you, and Allah is Most Gracious to the believers.
3:153. ˹Remember˺ when you were running far away ˹in panic˺—not looking at anyone—while the Messenger was calling to you from behind! So Allah rewarded your disobedience with distress upon distress. Now, do not grieve over the victory you were denied or the injury you suffered. And Allah is All-Aware of what you do.
3:154. Then after distress, He sent down upon you security [in the form of] drowsiness, overcoming a faction of you, while another faction worried about themselves, thinking of Allah other than the truth - the thought of ignorance, saying, "Is there anything for us [to have done] in this matter?" Say, "Indeed, the matter belongs completely to Allah." They conceal within themselves what they will not reveal to you. They say, "If there was anything we could have done in the matter, some of us would not have been killed right here." Say, "Even if you had been inside your houses, those decreed to be killed would have come out to their death beds." [It was] so that Allah might test what is in your breasts and purify what is in your hearts. And Allah knows best what is ˹hidden˺ in the heart.
3:155. Those of you who turned back on the day the two armies met (i.e. the battle of Uhud), it was Shaitan who caused them to backslide (run away from the battlefield) because of some (sins) they had earned. But Allah, indeed, has forgiven them. Surely, Allah is Oft-Forgiving, Most Forbearing.
3:156. O you who have believed, do not be like those who disbelieved and said about their brothers when they traveled through the land or went out to fight, "If they had been with us, they would not have died or have been killed," so Allah makes that [misconception] a regret within their hearts. And it is Allah who gives life and causes death, and Allah is Seeing of what you do.
3:157. And if you are killed in the cause of Allah or die - then forgiveness from Allah and mercy are better than whatever they accumulate [in this world].
3:158. And whether you die, or are killed, verily, all of you will be gathered before Allah.
3:159. It is out of Allah’s mercy that you ˹O Prophet˺ have been lenient with them. Had you been cruel or hard-hearted, they would have certainly abandoned you. So pass over (their faults), and ask (Allah’s) Forgiveness for them; and consult them in the affairs. Then when you have taken a decision, put your trust in Allah, certainly, Allah loves those who put their trust (in Him).
3:160.If Allah helps you, none can overcome you; and if He abandons you, who is there after Him that can help you? And in Allah (Alone) let believers put their trust.
WITHHOLD SPOILS OF WAR (BATUL-MAL)
3:161. It is not appropriate for a prophet to illegally withhold spoils of war. And whoever does so, it will be held against them on the Day of Judgment. Then every soul will be paid in full for what it has done, and none will be wronged.
3:162. Are those who seek Allah’s pleasure like those who deserve Allah’s wrath? Hell is their home. What an evil destination!
3:163. They ˹each˺ have varying degrees in the sight of Allah. And Allah is All-Seeing of what they do.
ALLAH SENT MESSENGERS AMONG HUMANS
3:164. Indeed, Allah has done the believers a ˹great˺ favor by raising a messenger from among them—reciting to them His revelations, purifying them, and teaching them the Book and wisdom. For indeed they had previously been clearly astray
3:165. Why [is it that] when a [single] disaster struck you [on the day of Uhud], although you had struck [the enemy in the battle of Badr] with one twice as great, you said, "From where is this?" Say, "It is from yourselves.” And Allah has power over all things.
3:166. So what you suffered on the day the two armies met was by Allah’s Will, so that He might distinguish the ˹true˺ believers
3:167. And that He might test the hypocrites, it was said to them: “Come, fight in the Way of Allah or (at least) defend yourselves.” They said: “Had we known that fighting will take place, we would certainly have followed you.” They were that day, nearer to disbelief than to Faith, saying with their mouths what was not in their hearts. And Allah has full knowledge of what they conceal.
3:168. Those who said about their brothers while sitting [at home], "If they had obeyed us, they would not have been killed." Say, "Then prevent death from yourselves, if you should be truthful."
3:169. And never think of those who have been killed in the cause of Allah as dead. Rather, they are alive with their Lord, receiving provision,
3:170. Rejoicing in Allah’s bounties and being delighted for those yet to join them. There will be no fear for them, nor will they grieve.
3:171. They rejoice in a Grace and a Bounty from Allah, and that Allah will not waste the reward of the believers.
3:172. Those who answered (the Call of) Allah and the Messenger after being wounded; for those of them who did good deeds and feared Allah, there is a great reward.
3:173. Those to whom hypocrites said, "Indeed, the people have gathered against you, so fear them." But it [merely] increased them in faith, and they said, "Sufficient for us is Allah , and [He is] the best Disposer of affairs."
3:174. So they returned with Grace and Bounty from Allah. No harm touched them; and they followed the good Pleasure of Allah. And Allah is the owner of the Great Bounty.
3:175. That is only Shaitan who frightens [you] of his supporters. So fear them not, but fear Me, if you are [indeed] believers.
3:176. And let not those grieve you (O Muhammad ) who rush with haste to disbelieve; verily, not the least harm will they do to Allah. It is Allah’s Will to give them no portion in the Hereafter. For them there is a great torment.
3:177. Those who trade belief for disbelief will never harm Allah in the least, and they will suffer a painful punishment.
POSTPONING OF PUNISHMENT BY ALLAH
3:178. And let not the disbelievers think that Our postponing of their punishment is good for them. We postpone the punishment only so that they may increase in sinfulness. And for them is a disgracing torment.
3:179. Allah would not leave the believers in that [state] you are in [presently] until He separates the evil from the good. Nor would Allah reveal to you the unseen. But [instead], Allah chooses His messengers whom He wills, so believe in Allah and His messengers. And if you believe and fear Him, then for you is a great reward.
WITHHOLD WEALTH
3:180.And let not those who [greedily] withhold what Allah has given them of His bounty ever think that it is better for them. Rather, it is worse for them. They will be leashed ˹by their necks˺ on the Day of Judgment with whatever ˹wealth˺ they used to withhold. And to Allah belongs the heritage of the heavens and the earth. And Allah is All-Aware of what you do.
KILLING OF THE PROPHETS
3:181. Indeed, Allah has heard the statement of those (Jews) who say: “Truly, Allah is poor and we are rich!” We shall record what they have said and their killing of the Prophets unjustly, and We shall say: “Taste you the torment of the burning (Fire).”
3:182. This is because of that (evil) which your hands have sent before you. And certainly, Allah is never unjust to (His) slaves.
3:183. Those (Jews) who said: “Verily, “Allah has commanded us not to believe in any messenger unless he brings us an offering to be consumed by fire ˹from the sky˺.” Say, ˹O Prophet,˺ “Other prophets did in fact come to you before me with clear proofs and ˹even˺ what you demanded—why then did you kill them, if what you say is true?”
3:184. Then if they reject you (O Muhammad ), so were Messengers rejected before you, who came with Al-Baiyinat (clear signs, proofs, evidences) and the Scripture and the Book of Enlightenment.
REWARD AFTER DEATH
3:185. Every soul will taste death. And you will only receive your full reward on the Day of Judgment. And whoever is removed away from the Fire and admitted to Paradise, he indeed is successful. The life of this world is only the enjoyment of deception (a deceiving thing).
3:186.You ˹believers˺ will surely be tested in your wealth and yourselves, and you will certainly hear many hurtful words from those who were given the Scripture before you and ˹from˺ the polytheists. But if you are patient and fear Allah - indeed, that is of the matters [worthy] of determination.
EXCHANGED ALLAH’S REVELATION FOR SMALL PRICE
3:187.And [mention, O Muhammad], when Allah took a covenant from those who were given the Scripture, [saying], "You must make it clear to the people and not conceal it." But they threw it away behind their backs and exchanged it for a small price. And wretched is that which they purchased.
3:188. Do not let those who rejoice in their misdeeds and love to take credit for what they have not done think they will escape torment. They will suffer a painful punishment.
3:189. And to Allah belongs the kingdom of the heavens and the earth, and Allah has power over all things.
3:190. Verily! In the creation of the heavens and the earth, and in the alternation of night and day, there are indeed signs for men of understanding.
REMEMBERING ALLAH DAY AND NIGHT
3:191. Those who remember Allah (always, and in prayers) standing, sitting, and lying down on their sides, and think deeply about the creation of the heavens and the earth, (saying):
رَبَّنَا مَا خَلَقْتَ هَـٰذَا بَـٰطِلًۭا سُبْحَـٰنَكَ فَقِنَا عَذَابَ ٱلنَّارِ
“Our Lord! You have not created (all) this without purpose, glory to You! Protect us from the torment of the Fire.
“Our Lord! Verily, whom You admit to the Fire, indeed, You have disgraced him, and never will the Zalimun find any helpers.
“Our Lord! Verily, we have heard the call of one (Muhammad ) calling to Faith: ‘Believe in your Lord,’ and we have believed.
رَبَّنَا فَٱغْفِرْ لَنَا ذُنُوبَنَا وَكَفِّرْ عَنَّا سَيِّـَٔاتِنَا وَتَوَفَّنَا مَعَ ٱلْأَبْرَارِ
Our Lord! Forgive us our sins and remit from us our evil deeds, and make us die in the state of righteousness along with Al-Abrar (those who are obedient to Allah and follow strictly His Orders).
“Our Lord! Grant us what You promised unto us through Your Messengers and disgrace us not on the Day of Resurrection, for You never break (Your) Promise.”
ALLAH’S RESPONSE
3:195. So their Lord responded to them: “I will never deny any of you—male or female—the reward of your deeds. Both are equal in reward. Those who migrated or were expelled from their homes, and were persecuted for My sake and fought and ˹some˺ were martyred—I will certainly forgive their sins and admit them into Gardens under which rivers flow, as a reward from Allah. And with Allah is the best of rewards.”
3:196. (Muhammad), do not be deceived by the changing activities of the unbelievers in different parts of the land.
3:197. A brief enjoyment; then, their ultimate home is Hell; and worst indeed is that place for rest.
3:198. But those who feared their Lord will have gardens beneath which rivers flow, abiding eternally therein, as accommodation from Allah. And that which is with Allah is best for the righteous.
3:199. And there are, certainly, among the people of the Scripture (Jews and Christians), those who believe in Allah and in that which has been revealed to you, and in that which has been revealed to them, humbling themselves before Allah. They do not sell the Verses of Allah for a little price, for them is a reward with their Lord. Surely, Allah is Swift in account.
3:200. O you who believe! be patient and excel in patience and remain steadfast, and be careful of (your duty to) Allah, that you may be successful.
