SURAH AL- ARAAF
The Elevated Places
(Maccie, Surah # 7, Verses 206 )
7:1 Alif-Lãm-Mĩm-Ṣãd.
7:2 This is˺ a Book sent down to you ˹O Prophet˺—do not let anxiety into your heart regarding it—so with it you may warn ˹the disbelievers˺, and as a reminder to the believers.
7:3 Follow what has been sent down unto you from your Lord (the Quran and Prophet Muhammad's Sunnah), and follow not any Auliya, besides Him (Allah). Little do you remember!
7:4 And a great number of towns, we destroyed. Our torment came upon them (suddenly) by night or while they were sleeping for their afternoon rest.
7:5 No cry did they utter when Our Torment came upon them but this: "Verily, we were Zalimun (wrongdoers)".
7:6 We will surely question those who received messengers and We will question the messengers ˹themselves˺.
7:7 We will tell them with absolute knowledge (what they had done) for We had never been absent from them (during their lifetime).
SCALE
7:8 The weighing on that Day will be just. As for those whose scale will be heavy ˹with good deeds˺, ˹only˺ they will be successful.
7:9 But those whose scale is light, they have doomed themselves for wrongfully denying Our Ayat.
7:10 And surely, We gave you authority on the earth and appointed for you therein provisions (for your life). Little thanks do you give.
IBLIS
7:11 Surely We created you, then shaped you, then said to the angels, “Prostrate before Adam,” so they all did—but not Iblîs, who refused to prostrate with the others.
7:12 Allah asked, “What prevented you from prostrating when I commanded you?” He replied, “I am better than he is: You created me from fire and him from clay.”
7:13 Allah said, “Then get down from Paradise! It is not for you to be arrogant here. So get out! You are truly one of the disgraced.”
7:14 He appealed, “Then delay my end until the Day of their resurrection.”
7:15 Allah said, “You are delayed ˹until the appointed Day˺.”
7:16 Then Shaitan said, "Because you have made me go astray, I shall certainly try to seduce people into straying from the right path.
7:17 I will approach them from their front, their back, their right, their left, and then You will find most of them ungrateful.”
7:18 Allah said, “Get out of Paradise! You are disgraced and rejected! I will certainly fill up Hell with you and your followers all together.”
ADAM & HIS WIFE EAT FROM THE TREE
7:19 Allah said,˺ “O Adam! Live with your wife in Paradise and eat from wherever you please, but do not approach this tree, or else you will be wrongdoers.”
7:20 Then Shaitan whispered suggestions to them both in order to uncover that which was hidden from them of their private parts (before); he said:“Your Lord has forbidden this tree to you only to prevent you from becoming angels or immortals.”
7:21 And he swore to them, “I am truly your sincere advisor.”
7:22 So he misled them with deception. And when they tasted of the tree, their nakedness was exposed to them, prompting them to cover themselves with leaves from Paradise. Then their Lord called out to them, “Did I not forbid you from that tree and ˹did I not˺ tell you that Shaitan is your open enemy?”
DUA
7:23 They replied
“Our Lord! We have wronged ourselves. If You do not forgive us and have mercy on us, we will certainly be losers.”
7:24 Said He, 'Get down, each of you an enemy to each other. You will find in the earth a residence and provision for your appointed stay.”
7:25 He also said, “There you will live, there you will die, and from there you will be resurrected.”
CLOTHES
7:26 O children of Adam! We have provided for you clothing to cover your private parts and as an adornment. However, the best clothing is righteousness. This is one of Allah’s bounties, so perhaps you will be mindful.
SHAITAN
7:27 O Children of Adam! Let not Shaitan deceive you, as he got your parents [Adam and Hawwa] out of Paradise and caused their cover to be removed in order to expose their nakedness. Surely he(Shaitan) and his soldiers see you from where you cannot see them. We have made the devils allies(friends) of those who disbelieve.
7:28 And when they commit a Fahisha (evil deed, going round the Ka'bah in naked state), they say: "We found our fathers
doing it, and Allah has commanded us of it.''Say, “No! Allah never commands what is shameful. How can you attribute to
Allah what you do not know?”
7:29 Say, "My Lord has ordered me to maintain justice. (People), pay due attention (when worshiping God). Pray to Him
sincerely and be devoted in your religion. Just as He gave you life, He will bring you back to life again (after you die.)"
7:30 He has guided some, while others are destined to stray. They have taken devils as their masters instead of Allah—thinking
they are ˹rightly˺ guided.
DRESS PROPERLY WHILE PRAY, DO NOT WASTE FOOD
7:31 O Children of Adam! Dress properly whenever you are at worship. Eat and drink, but do not waste. Surely He does not like
the wasteful.
7:32 (Muhammad), ask them, "Who has made it unlawful to maintain beauty and to eat the pure foods which Allah has created
for His servants? They are made for the believers in this world and are exclusively for them in the life hereafter." Thus do We
explain Our revelations to the people who have knowledge.
7:33(Muhammad), tell them, "My Lord has only prohibited indecent acts committed in public or in secret, all sins, unrighteous oppression, joining partners (in worship) with Allah for which He has given no authority, and saying things about Allah of
which you have no knowledge."
7:34 And every nation has its appointed term; when their term is reached, neither can they delay it nor can they advance it an
hour (or a moment).
7:35 O Children of Adam! If there come to you Messengers from amongst you, reciting to you, My Verses, then whosoever
becomes pious and righteous, on them shall be no fear, nor shall they grieve.
7:36 But those who reject Our Ayat and treat them with arrogance, they are the dwellers of the (Hell) Fire, they will abide
therein forever.
DISBELIEVERS WILL CONFESS
7:37 Who are more unjust than those who invent falsehoods against Allah and reject His revelations? These will have their share
(of torment) which is ordained for them and when Our (angelic) Messengers come to them to cause them to die and ask them, "Where are those whom you had been worshiping besides Allah?" they will reply, "We had gone astray from the path of Allah.
" Thus, they will testify against their own souls by confessing their disbelief.
7:38(On the Day of Judgment) the Lord will say to them, "Join the group of jinn and people who lived before you, in hell." Each group, on entering hell, will curse the other dwellers, until all of them are brought together therein. The last group will accuse the first saying, "Lord, they made us go astray. Therefore, double their torment in the Fire." The Lord will reply, "For everyone of
you there is a double torment, but you do not know it".
7:39 The first will then say, "You are no better than us; suffer the torment as the result of your deeds.
CAMEL GOES THROUGH THE EYE OF THE NEEDLE
7:40 Verily, those who belie Our Ayat and treat them with arrogance, for them the gates of heaven will not be opened, and they
will not enter Paradise until the camel goes through the eye of the needle (which is impossible). This is how We reward the wicked.
7:41 Hell will be their bed; flames will be their cover. This is how We reward the wrongdoers.
7:42 As for those who believe and do good—We never require of any soul more than what it can afford—it is they who will be the residents of Paradise. They will be there forever.
NO MORE GRUDGES IN BELIEVER'S HEART
7:43 We will remove whatever bitterness(grudges) they had in their hearts. Rivers will flow under their feet. And they will say, “Praise be to Allah for guiding us to this. We would have never been guided if Allah had not guided us. The messengers of our
Lord had certainly come with the truth.” It will be announced to them, “This is Paradise awarded to you for what you used to do.”
THE RESIDENTS OF PARADISE WILL CALL OUT TO THE RESIDENTS OF THE FIRE
7:44 The residents of Paradise will call out to the residents of the Fire, “We have certainly found our Lord’s promise to be true.
Have you too found your Lord’s promise to be true?” They will reply, “Yes, we have!”Then a crier will proclaim between them:
"The Curse of Allah is on the Zalimun.
7:45 Those who hindered (men) from the Path of Allah, and would seek to make it crooked, and they were disbelievers in the Hereafter.
7:46 There will be a barrier between the people of Paradise and hell. There will be people on the heights who know everyone by
their faces and who will say to the people of Paradise, "Peace be upon you." They hope to enter Paradise but are not yet therein.
7:47 When their eyes will turn towards the residents of Hell, they will pray,
رَبَّنَا لَا تَجْعَلْنَا مَعَ ٱلْقَوْمِ ٱلظَّـٰلِمِينَ “Our Lord! Do not join us with the wrongdoers
7:48 Those on the heights will call out to some ˹tyrants in the Fire˺, who they will recognize by their appearance, saying,
“Your large numbers and arrogance are of no use ˹today˺!
7:49 Are they those, of whom you swore that Allah would never show them mercy. (Behold! It has been said to them): "Enter Paradise, no fear shall be on you, nor shall you grieve."
7:50 And the dwellers of the Fire will call to the dwellers of Paradise: "Pour on us some water or anything that Allah has
provided you with." They will say: "Both (water and provision) Allah has forbidden to the disbelievers."
7:51 "Who took their religion as an amusement and play, and the life of the world deceived them." So this Day We shall forget
them as they forgot their meeting of this Day, and as they used to reject Our Ayat.
QURAN IS A GUIDANCE
7:52 Certainly, We have brought to them a Book (the Quran) which We have explained in detail with knowledge, - a guidance
and a mercy to the people who believe.
7:53 (Despite the clear details of Our guidance in the Book) do they still wait for further interpretations? On the Day
(of Judgment) when its interpretations will be revealed, those who had ignored its guidance will confess, saying, "The
Messengers of our Lord had certainly come to us with the Truth. Will anyone intercede for us or send us back (to life) so that we would be able to act in a different manner to that which we had done before?" These people have certainly lost their souls and
their evil inventions (which they had used for false excuses) will vanish.
CREATION OF ALLAH
7:54 Indeed your Lord is Allah Who created the heavens and the earth in six Days, then established Himself on the Throne. He
makes the day and night overlap in rapid succession. He created the sun, the moon, and the stars—all subjected by His command. The creation and the command belong to Him ˹alone˺. Blessed is Allah—Lord of all worlds!
7:55 Pray to your Lord humbly and privately. God does not love the transgressors.
7:56 Do not spread corruption in the land after it has been set in order. And call upon Him with hope and fear. Indeed, Allah’s
mercy is always close to the good-doers.
7:57 Allah sends the wind bearing the glad news of His mercy. When heavy clouds are formed, We drive them unto a barren
country and rain down on it water, to cause all kinds of fruits to grow. In the same way do We bring the dead to life again.
Perhaps you would take heed.
7:58 The fertile land produces abundantly by the Will of its Lord, whereas the infertile land hardly produces anything. This is
how We vary ˹Our˺ lessons to those who are thankful.
PROPHET NUH
7:59 Indeed, We sent Noah to his people. He said, “O my people! Worship Allah—you have no other God except Him. I truly fear
for you the torment of a tremendous Day.”
7:60 The leaders of his people said: "Verily, we see you in plain error."
7:61He replied, “O my people! I am not misguided! But I am a messenger from the Lord of all worlds.
7:62"I convey unto you the Messages of my Lord and give sincere advice to you. And I know from Allah what you know not.
7:63"Do you wonder that there has come to you a Reminder from your Lord through a man from amongst you, that he may
warn you, so that you may fear Allah and that you may receive (His) Mercy?"
7:64 But they rejected him, so We saved him and those with him in the Ark, and drowned those who rejected Our signs. They
were certainly a blind people.
PROPHET HUD (PEOPLE OF AD)
7:65 And to the people of ’Âd We sent their brother Hûd. He said, “O my people! Worship Allah—you have no other god except
Him. Will you not then fear Him?”
7:66 The leaders of those who disbelieved among his people said: "Verily, we see you in foolishness, and verily, we think you are
one of the liars."
7:67 Hûd replied, “O my people! I am no fool! But I am a messenger from the Lord of all worlds,
7:68 "I convey unto you the Messages of my Lord, and I am a trustworthy adviser for you.
7:69 "Do you wonder that there has come to you a Reminder from your Lord through a man from amongst you that he may
warn you? And remember that He made you successors after the people of Nuh, and increased you amply in stature. So
remember the graces (bestowed upon you) from Allah, so that you may be successful."
7:70 They said: "You have come to us that we should worship Allah Alone and abandon that which our fathers used to worship.
So bring us that wherewith you have threatened us if what you say is true"
7:71(Hud) said: "Torment and wrath have already fallen on you from your Lord. Dispute you with me over names which you
have named - you and your fathers, with no authority from Allah? Then wait, I am with you among those who wait."
7:72 So We saved him and those who were with him by a Mercy from Us, and We cut the roots of those who belied Our Ayat, and they were not believers.
PROPHET SALIH( PEOPLE OF THAMUD)
7:73 And to the people of Thamûd We sent their brother Ṣâliḥ. He said, “O my people! Worship Allah—you have no other god except Him. A clear proof has come to you from your Lord: this is Allah’s she-camel as a sign to you. So leave her to graze ˹freely˺ on Allah’s land and do not harm her, or else you will be overcome by a painful punishment.
7:74 Remember when He made you successors after ’Âd and established you in the land—˹and˺ you built palaces on its plains and carved homes into mountains. So remember Allah’s favors, and do not go about spreading corruption in the land.”
7:75 The arrogant chiefs of his people asked the lowly (weak) who believed among them, “Are you certain that Ṣâliḥ has been sent by his Lord?” They replied, “We certainly believe in what he has been sent with.”
7:76 Those who were arrogant said: "Verily, we disbelieve in that which you believe in."
7:77 Then they killed the she-camel—defying their Lord’s command—and challenged ˹Ṣâliḥ˺, “Bring us what you threaten us with, if you are ˹truly˺ one of the messengers.”
7:78 Then an ˹overwhelming˺ earthquake struck them, and they fell lifeless in their homes.
7:79 So he turned away from them, saying, “O my people! Surely I conveyed to you my Lord’s message and gave you ˹sincere˺ advice, but you do not like ˹sincere˺ advisors.”
PROPHET LUT
7:80 And (remember) Lout (Lot), when he said to his people: "Why do you commit such indecent acts that have never been committed by anyone before?
7:81 "Verily, you practice your lusts on men instead of women. Nay, but you are a people transgressing beyond bounds (by committing great sins)."
7:82 And the answer of his people was only that they said: "Drive them out of your town, these are indeed men who want to be pure (from sins)!"
7:83 Then We saved him and his family, except his wife; she was of those who remained behind (in the torment).
7:84 And We rained down on them a rain (of stones). Then see what was the end of the Mujrimun
PROPHET SHUAIB (PEOPLE OF MADYAN)
7:85 And to the people of Madyan We sent their brother Shu’aib. He said, “O my people! Worship Allah—you have no other god except Him. A clear proof has already come to you from your Lord. So give just (full) measure and weight, do not defraud people of their property, nor spread corruption in the land after it has been set in order. This is for your own good, if you are ˹truly˺ believers.
7:86 "And sit not on every road, threatening, and hindering from the Path of Allah those who believe in Him. and seeking to make it crooked. And remember when you were but few, and He multiplied you. And see what was the end of the Mufsidun (mischief-makers, corrupts, liars).
7:87 "And if there is a party of you who believes in that with which I have been sent and a party who donot believe, so be patient until Allah judges between us, and He is the Best of judges."
7:88 The chiefs of those who were arrogant among his people said: "We shall certainly drive you out, O Shu'aib, and those who have believed with you from our town, or else you (all) shall return to our religion." He said: "Even though we hate it!
7:89 We would surely be fabricating a lie against Allah if we were to return to your faith after Allah has saved us from it. It does not befit us to return to it unless it is the Will of Allah, our Lord. Our Lord has encompassed everything in ˹His˺ knowledge. In Allah we trust.
رَبَّنَا ٱفْتَحْ بَيْنَنَا وَبَيْنَ قَوْمِنَا بِٱلْحَقِّ وَأَنتَ خَيْرُ ٱلْفَـٰتِحِينَ
Our Lord! Judge between us and our people with truth. You are the best of those who judge.”
7:90 The chiefs of those who disbelieved among his people said (to their people): "If you follow Shu'aib, be sure then you will be the losers!"
7:91 Then an ˹overwhelming˺ earthquake struck them and they fell lifeless in their homes.
7:92 Those who rejected Shu’aib were ˹wiped out˺ as if they had never lived there. Those who rejected Shu’aib were the true losers.
7:93 He turned away from them, saying, “O my people! Indeed, I have delivered to you the messages of my Lord and gave you ˹sincere˺ advice. How can I then grieve for those who chose to disbelieve?”
7:94 To every town that We sent a Prophet, We tested its inhabitants through distress and adversity so that perhaps they would submit themselves to Us.
7:95 Then We changed the evil for the good, until they increased in number and in wealth, and said: "Our fathers were touched with evil and with good. So We seized them all of a sudden while they were unaware.
7:96 Had the people of those societies been faithful and mindful ˹of Allah˺, We would have overwhelmed them with blessings from heaven and earth. But they disbelieved, so We seized them for what they used to commit.
7:97 Did the people of those societies feel secure that Our punishment would not come upon them by night while they were asleep?
7:98 Or did they feel secure that Our punishment would not come upon them by day while they were at play?
7:99 Did they feel secure against Allah’s planning? None would feel secure from Allah’s planning except the losers.
7:100 Is it not clear to those who take over the land after ˹the destruction of˺ its former residents that—if We will—We can punish them ˹too˺ for their sins and seal their hearts so they will not hear ˹the truth˺?
7:101 We have narrated to you ˹O Prophet˺ some of the stories of those societies. Surely, their messengers came to them with clear proof, but still they would not believe in what they had already denied. This is how Allah seals the hearts of the disbelievers.
7:102 We did not find most of them true to their covenant. Rather, We found most of them truly rebellious.
PROPHET MUSA
7:103 Then after them We sent Musa with Our Signs to Fir'aun and his chiefs, but they wrongfully rejected them. So see how was the end of the Mufsidun (mischief-makers, corrupts, etc.).
7:104 And Musa said: "O Fir'aun! I am a Messenger from the Lord of the 'Alamin
7:105 I must only speak what is true about God. I have brought you miracles from your Lord; therefore, let the children of Israel go free".
7:106 Pharaoh said: "If you have come with a sign, show it forth, - if you are one of those who tell the truth."
7:107 Then [Musa (Moses)] threw his stick and suddenly it turned into a real snake.
7:108 And he drew out his hand; thereupon it was white [with radiance] for the observers.
7:109 The chiefs of Pharaoh’s people said, “He is indeed a skilled magician,
7:110 and said, "He wants to expel you from your land." They asked (others), " what is your opinion in the matter?
7:111 They said: "Put him and his brother off (for a time), and send callers (men) to the cities to collect (and) -
7:112 to bring together at the Pharaohs court all the skillful magicians.
7:113 The magicians came to the Pharaoh and said, "We must have our reward if we are to gain a victory over him (Moses)".
7:114 The Pharaoh replied, "In addition to your rewards, you will become my close friends thereafter."
7:115 The magicians asked Moses, "Will you throw your staff first or shall we?"
7:116 Moses said, “You first.” So when they did, they deceived the eyes of the people, stunned them, and made a great display of magic.
7:117 We inspired Moses to throw his stick, and suddenly it began to swallow-up all that the magicians had (falsely) invented.
7:118 Thus truth was confirmed, and all that they did was made of no effect.
7:119 So they were defeated there and then, and were returned disgraced.
7:120 And the magicians fell down, prostrating.
7:121They said: "We believe in the Lord of the 'Alamin
7:122"The Lord of Musa (Moses) and Harun (Aaron)."
7:123 Fir'aun (Pharaoh) said: "You have believed in him [Musa (Moses)] before I give you permission. Surely, this is a plot which you have plotted in the city to drive out its people, but you shall come to know.
7:124 "Surely, I will cut off your hands and your feet on opposite sides, then I will crucify you all."
7:125 They said: "Verily, we are returning to our Lord.
7:126 You only take revenge on us because we believed in the Lord when we saw His miracles.
رَبَّنَآ أَفْرِغْ عَلَيْنَا صَبْرًۭا وَتَوَفَّنَا مُسْلِمِينَ
O Lord, grant us patience and let us die Muslims (submitted to God)."
7:127 The chiefs of Fir'aun's (Pharaoh) people said: "Will you leave Musa (Moses) and his people to spread mischief in the land, and to abandon you and your gods?" He said: "We will kill their sons, and let live their women, and we have indeed irresistible power over them."
7:128 Moses reassured his people, “Seek Allah’s help and be patient. Indeed, the earth belongs to Allah ˹alone˺. He grants it to whoever He chooses of His servants. The ultimate outcome belongs ˹only˺ to the righteous.”
7:129 His people said, "We suffered a great deal before you came and we are still suffering even after you have come." Moses (tried to encourage them) by saying, "There is hope that your Lord will destroy your enemies and make you (their) successors in the land. So consider how you act."
7:130 And indeed We punished the people of Fir'aun (Pharaoh) with years of drought and shortness of fruits (crops, etc.), that they might remember (take heed).
7:131 In times of prosperity, they said, “This is what we deserve,” but in adversity, they blamed it on Moses and those with him.1 Surely all is destined by Allah. Yet most of them did not know.
7:132They said, “No matter what sign you may bring to deceive us, we will never believe in you.”
7:133 So We sent on them: the flood, the locusts, the lice, the frogs, and the blood: manifest signs, yet they remained arrogant, and they were of those people who were Mujrimu.
7:134 When the torment would strike them, they would ask Moses, "Pray for us to your Lord through your covenant with Him. If He saves us from the torment, we shall certainly believe in you and permit you and the children of Israel to leave".
7:135 But when We relieved them from the torment for a given time, they again broke their promise.
7:136 We took revenge on them for their rejecting Our miracles, by drowning them in the sea, but they were not aware of (reality).
7:137And We made the people who were considered weak to inherit the eastern parts of the land and the western parts thereof which We have blessed. And the fair Word of your Lord was fulfilled for the Children of Israel, because of their endurance. And We completely destroyed all the great works and buildings which Fir'aun (Pharaoh) and his people erected.
7:138 We brought the Children of Israel across the sea and they came upon a people devoted to idols. They demanded, “O Moses! Make for us a god like their gods.” He replied, “Indeed, you are a people acting ignorantly!
7:139 Musa added: "Verily, these people will be destroyed for that which they are engaged in (idols-worship). And all that they are doing is in vain."
7:140 He said: "Shall I seek for you an Ilahan (a God) other than Allah, while He has given you superiority over the 'Alamin.
7:141 And (remember) when We rescued you from Fir'aun's (Pharaoh) people, who were afflicting you with the worst torment, killing your sons and letting your women live. And in that was a great trial from your Lord.
7:142 We appointed for Moses thirty nights then added another ten—completing his Lord’s term of forty nights. Moses commanded his brother Aaron, “Take my place among my people, do what is right, and do not follow the way of the corruptors.”
7:143 When Moses came at the appointed time and his Lord spoke to him, he asked, “My Lord! Reveal Yourself to me so I may see You.” Allah answered, “You cannot see Me! But look at the mountain. If it remains firm in its place, only then will you see Me.” When his Lord appeared to the mountain, He leveled it to dust and Moses collapsed unconscious. When he recovered, he cried, “Glory be to You! I turn to You in repentance and I am the first of the believers.”
7:144 (Allah) said: "O Musa (Moses) I have chosen you above men by My Messages, and by My speaking (to you). So hold that which I have given you and be of the grateful."
7:145 We wrote advice and laws for him on Tablets about all kinds of things, saying, "Follow them and command your people to follow the good advice therein, and I will show you the dwellings of the evil-doers."
7:146 I will turn away from My signs those who act unjustly with arrogance in the land. And even if they were to see every sign, they still would not believe in them. If they see the Right Path, they will not take it. But if they see a crooked path, they will follow it. This is because they denied Our signs and were heedless of them.
7:147 Those who deny Our Ayat and the Meeting in the Hereafter (Day of Resurrection), vain are their deeds. Do they expect to be rewarded with anything except what they used to do?
7:148 In the absence of Moses, his people made from their ˹golden˺ jewelry an idol of a calf that made a lowing sound. Did they not see that it could neither speak to them nor guide them to the ˹Right˺ Path? Still they took it as a god and were wrongdoers.
7:149 Later, when they were filled with remorse and realized they had gone astray, they cried, “If our Lord does not have mercy on us and forgive us, we will certainly be losers.”
7:150 Upon Moses’ return to his people, ˹totally˺ furious and sorrowful, he said, “What an evil thing you committed in my absence! Did you want to hasten your Lord’s torment?” Then he threw down the Tablets and grabbed his brother by the hair, dragging him closer. Aaron pleaded, “O son of my mother! The people overpowered me and were about to kill me. So do not ˹humiliate me and˺ make my enemies rejoice, nor count me among the wrongdoing people.”
7:151 Musa said: "O my Lord! Forgive me and my brother, and make us enter into Your Mercy, for you are the Most Merciful of those who show mercy."
7:152 Certainly, those who took the calf (for worship), wrath from their Lord and humiliation will come upon them in the life of this world. Thus do We recompense those who invent lies.
7:153 But those who commit evil, then repent and become ˹true˺ believers, your Lord will certainly be All-Forgiving, Most-Merciful.
7:154 When Moses' anger calmed down, he collected the Tablets. On one of them was written, "God's mercy and guidance are for those who have fear of Him."
7:155 Moses selected seventy men from his people to attend Our appointment. (In Our presence). When an earthquake jolted them to death, Moses said, "Lord, had You wanted to destroy them, why did You not destroy them and me before. Are You destroying us for what the fools among us have done? This (destruction) is only a trial through which You cause some to go astray and guide others. You are our Guardian. Forgive us and have mercy on us; You are the best of those who forgive.
7:156 And ordain for us good in this world, and in the Hereafter. Certainly we have turned unto You." He said: (As to) My Punishment I afflict therewith whom I will and My Mercy embraces all things. That (Mercy) I shall ordain for those who are the Muttaqun , and give Zakat; and those who believe in Our Ayat.
7:157 “˹They are˺ the ones who follow the Messenger, the unlettered Prophet, whose description they find in their Torah and the Injeel. He commands them to do good and forbids them from evil, permits for them what is lawful and forbids to them what is impure, and relieves them of their burden and the shackles which were upon them. So they who have believed in him, honored him, supported him and followed the light which was sent down with him - it is those who will be the successful.
ALLAH’S MESSAGE TO THE HUMANITY
7:158 Say, ˹O Prophet,˺ “O humanity! I am Allah’s Messenger to you all. To Him ˹alone˺ belongs the kingdom of the heavens and the earth. There is no God ˹worthy of worship˺ except Him. He gives life and causes death.” So believe in Allah and His Messenger, the unlettered Prophet, who believes in Allah and His revelations. And follow him, so you may be ˹rightly˺ guided.
7:159 There are some among the people of Moses who guide with the truth and establish justice accordingly.
7:160We divided them into twelve tribes—each as a community. And We revealed to Moses, when his people asked for water, “Strike the rock with your stick.” Then twelve springs gushed out. Each tribe knew its drinking place. We shaded them with clouds and sent down to them manna and quails,1 ˹saying˺, “Eat from the good things We have provided for you.” They ˹certainly˺ did not wrong Us, but wronged themselves.
7:161 And (remember) when it was said to them: "Dwell in this town (Jerusalem) and eat therefrom wherever you wish, and say, '(O Allah) forgive our sins'; and enter the gate prostrate (bowing with humility). We shall forgive you your wrong-doings. We shall increase (the reward) for the good-doers."
7:162 But the wrongdoers among them changed the words they were commanded to say. So We sent down a punishment from the heavens upon them for their wrongdoing.
SABBATH (PEOPLE BY THE SEA)
7:163 Ask them ˹O Prophet˺ about ˹the people of˺ the town which was by the sea, who broke the Sabbath. During the Sabbath, ˹abundant˺ fish would come to them clearly visible, but on other days the fish were never seen. In this way We tested them for their rebelliousness.
7:164 When a group of them questioned another group saying, "Why do you preach to those whom God has decided to destroy or punish by a severe torment?" they replied, "We preach to them for we are responsible in the sight of your Lord and so that perhaps they may have fear of God."
7:165 When they ignored the warning they were given, We rescued those who used to warn against evil and overtook the wrongdoers with a dreadful punishment for their rebelliousness.
7:166 So when they exceeded the limits of what they were prohibited, We said to them: "Be you monkeys, despised and rejected."
JEWS
7:167 And [mention] when your Lord declared that He would surely [continue to] send upon them(i.e. the Jews) until the Day of Resurrection those who would afflict them with the worst torment. Indeed, your Lord is swift in penalty; but indeed, He is Forgiving and Merciful.
7:168We divided them (i.e. the Jews)into nations on the earth; some are righteous and others are not. We tested them with well-being and hardship so that they might return (to the right path).
7:169 Then they were succeeded by other generations who inherited the Scripture. They indulged in unlawful gains, claiming, “We will be forgiven ˹after all˺.” And if similar gain came their way, they would seize it. Was a covenant not taken from them in the Scripture that they would not say anything about Allah except the truth? And they were already well-versed in its teachings. But the ˹eternal˺ Home of the Hereafter is far better for those mindful ˹of Allah˺. Will you not then understand?
7:170 And as to those who hold fast to the Book (i.e. act on its teachings) and perform As-Salat (Iqamat-as-Salat), certainly, We shall never waste the reward of those who do righteous deeds.
7:171 And ˹remember˺ when We raised the mountain over them as if it were a cloud and they thought it would fall on them.1 ˹We said,˺ “Hold firmly to that ˹Scripture˺(Taurat) which We have given you and observe its teachings so perhaps you will become mindful ˹of Allah˺.”
ALLAH TOOK OATH FROM US IN ALAM-E-ARWAH
7:172 And ˹remember˺ when your Lord brought forth from the loins of the children of Adam their descendants and had them testify regarding themselves. ˹Allah asked,˺ “Am I not your Lord?” They replied, “Yes, You are! We testify.” ˹He cautioned,˺ “Now you have no right to say on Judgment Day, ‘We were not aware of this.’
7:173 Nor say, ‘It was our forefathers who had associated others ˹with Allah in worship˺ and we, as their descendants, followed in their footsteps. Will you then destroy us for the falsehood they invented?’”
7:174 This is how We make our signs clear, so perhaps they will return ˹to the Right Path
7:175 And recite (O Muhammad) to them the story of him to whom We gave Our Ayat , but he threw them away, so Shaitan followed him up, and he became of those who went astray.
7:176 Had We wanted, We could have raised him to an exalted position but he clung to his earthly life and followed his own (evil) desires. Such a person's bad habits are like those of a lazy dog (in a warm climate) who always has its tongue hanging out whether you chase it away or leave it alone. Such are the people who have called Our revelations mere lies. (Muhammad), tell them such stories so that perhaps they will think.
7:177 What an evil example of those who denied Our signs! They ˹only˺ wronged their own souls.
7:178 Whoever Allah guides is truly guided. And whoever He leaves to stray, they are the ˹true˺ losers.
7:179 Indeed, We have destined many jinn and humans for Hell. They have hearts they do not understand with, eyes they do not see with, and ears they do not hear with. They are like cattle. In fact, they are even less guided! Such ˹people˺ are ˹entirely˺ heedless.
CALL ALLAH BY HIS BEAUTIFUL NAMES
7:180 Allah has the Most Beautiful Names. So call upon Him by them, and keep away from those who abuse His Names. They will be punished for what they used to do.
7:181 And among those We created is a group that guides with the truth and establishes justice accordingly.
7:182 As for those who deny Our signs, We will gradually draw them to destruction in ways they cannot comprehend.
7:183 I ˹only˺ delay their end for a while, but My planning is flawless.
7:184 Do they not reflect? There is no madness in their companion (Muhammad SAW). He is but a plain warner.
7:185 Have they ever reflected on the wonders of the heavens and the earth, and everything Allah has created, and that perhaps their end is near? So what message after this ˹Quran˺ would they believe in?
7:186 Whomsoever Allah sends astray, none can guide him; and He lets them wander blindly in their transgressions.
7:187 They ask you about the Hour (Day of Resurrection): "When will be its appointed time?" Say: "The knowledge thereof is with my Lord (Alone). None can reveal its time but He. Heavy is its burden through the heavens and the earth. It shall not come upon you except all of a sudden." They ask you as if you have a good knowledge of it. Say: "The knowledge thereof is with Allah (Alone) but most of mankind know not."
7:188 Say, “I have no power to benefit or protect myself, except by the Will of Allah. If I had known the unknown, I would have benefited myself enormously, and no harm would have ever touched me. I am only a warner and deliverer of good news for those who believe.”
GRANT US A CHILD SO WE GIVE THANKS
7:189 It is God Who created you from a single soul and out of it made its spouse to bring it comfort. When he (man) engaged in carnal relations with her, she conceived a light burden which she had to carry. When the baby grew in her womb, they (husband and wife) both prayed to their Lord, "If You grant us a healthy son we shall certainly give you thanks."
7:190 But when He granted their descendants good offspring, they associated false gods in what He has given them. Exalted is Allah above what they associate ˹with Him˺!
THEY CREATED PARTNERS TO ALLAH
7:191 Do they attribute as partners to Allah those who created nothing but they themselves are created?
7:192 which cannot help them, or even help themselves?
7:193 Believers, even if you invite them to true guidance, they will not follow you. It makes no difference whether you invite them or whether you keep quiet.
7:194 Verily, those whom you call upon besides Allah are slaves like you. So call upon them and let them answer you if you are truthful.
7:195 Do they (the idols) have feet to walk, hands to hold things, eyes to see, and ears to hear? (Muhammad), tell them (the pagans) to call on their idols for help and to plan against Me without delay.
7:196 “Indeed, my Protector is Allah Who has revealed this Book. For He ˹alone˺ protects the righteous.
7:197 "And those whom you call upon besides Him (Allah) cannot help you nor can they help themselves."
7:198(Muhammad), if you invite them to the right guidance, they will not listen to you. You will see them looking at you but they do not really see.
7:199 Have forgiveness, preach the truth, and keep away from the ignorant ones.
7:200 If you are tempted by Shaitan, then seek refuge with Allah. Surely He is All-Hearing, All-Knowing.
7:201 Indeed, when Shaitan whispers to those mindful ˹of Allah˺, they remember ˹their Lord˺ then they start to see ˹things˺ clearly.
7:202 But (as for) their brothers (the devils) they (i.e. the devils) plunge them deeper into error, and they never stop short.
WISDOM IN QURAN
7:203 If you , (Muhammad), do not show them a miracle, they will keep on insisting that you must show them one. Say, "I only follow what is revealed to me from my Lord. This (Quran) contains wisdom for you from your Lord. It contains guidance and mercy for those who have faith.
7:204 So, when the Quran is recited, listen to it, and be silent so that you may receive mercy.
7:205 Remember your Lord deep within yourselves, humbly and privately - instead of shouting out loud - (in prayer) in the mornings and evenings and do not be of the heedless ones.
7:206 Surely, those who are with your Lord (angels) are never too proud to perform acts of worship to Him, but they glorify His Praise and prostrate before Him. (سجدة)
